I woke up this morning to find an email from Chase Jarvis’s camp showcasing his new photo campaign for the Samsung 9 Series Monitors. It feels like ages since Chase has released one of his epic behind the scenes videos, so I was excited to see he’s still alive and kicking the creative cloud (pun intended). If your imaginative juices don’t start flowing after watching this video then it might be time to put your camera into retirement. Check out the behind the scenes video and then [more]
I’m James Robertson, a new addition to the Fstoppers writer staff and a full time commercial photographer/studio owner for the past year. I’ve joined the team to bring content to the readers who may find themselves either ready to jump into the professional world, or have already and are looking for tips to make life easier. I thought it would be good to start with an article that will give everyone some tips on simplifying the work load that comes with the industry through organization and planning ahead.

Phase One asked me to go on a speaking tour through China (Hong Kong, Shanghai, Beijing) to share about my photo career, creative inspiration, and being a Phase One shooter myself, to demo their innovative new IQ2 digital medium format camera back system. After flying in to Hong Kong from Washington DC just hours before, I had the great honor and pleasure to be a part of Digital Rev’s Cheap Camera Challenge. A broken Holga + jet lag + beer + a goof like myself = What could go wrong?

Some of you may have heard of David Douglas Duncan – famous for his war images, portraits and being a close friend of Pablo Picasso. His Leica M3 was sold for $2.19 million – the highest price ever paid for a commercially manufactured camera. Although the camera’s price has to do mainly with the images that came from it, it was also one of only four Leica M3Ds ever created – the “D” stands for Duncan. The cameras were ‘battle hardened’ to withstand some pretty tough situations. [more]
You’ve most certainly heard of Vincent Laforet, you just may not recognize the name. He is the mind and talent behind such short films as Reverie, Nocturne, and Mobius. In fact, when Canon was introducing video functionality into their DSLRs, they used Laforet’s footage to put it on the map. Now DigitalRev is giving him a new challenge, a LensBaby Composer and a Canon A2e. [more]
I’ve always been fascinated with underwater photography. As you may recall, I even featured some of it from Nick Pugay last month. Not only is underwater photography incredibly complicated in terms of lighting, but its incredibly expensive too. Outex is looking to change that with their new underwater kit, but they need your help with their latest Kickstarter project. [more]
Is this really the hip thing to do these days? Why is it that I keep reading headlines like this of wedding photographers turning to their iPhone versus their camera gear? I get that it’s trendy, and within seconds (with no Photoshop needed) you can add a grunge effect with an Instagram filter and have it posted online. But seriously… *shakes head*

The iphone is such a powerful device, download the right apps and you can create some inspiring photographs. Don’t get me wrong I am just as big of a gear head as anyone else, but I don’t let lack of equipment stop me from constantly taking pictures. I find myself taking excessive amounts of photos on my iphone. Adding on to nick Fancher’s “Inspiration over gear” post, for me I need to create. Many times I find myself wishing I had my camera with me, then realize my iphone is in my pocket. I have been able to capture a lot of moments in my life that otherwise would have evaded my memory as time passed. [more]
The path to success changes based on who you ask. There is no one path that gets you where you want to be. As creatives, we keep defining that path daily. Chase Jarvis recently talked at the PSFK seminar and he spoke about the new models of creativity. He argues that the traditional system is broken and most people who have ‘made it’ have done so through a-typical methods. [more]
Most of our readers should be familiar with Brain Farm. Basically they have been taking cinematography to the next level when it comes to action sports; think of them as the planet earth of extreme footage. Chase Jarvis recently invited executive producer Chad Jackson and pro snowboarder Travis Rice over to his Seattle studio to talk about the release of The Art of Flight. Watch the inspiring interview in the full post [more]
As many of us take normal portraits of people, some take the next step and turn the world upside down with their work… literally. In Marc Vicens latest series “The Faces of Unemployment” he does just that. Take portraits of people hanging upside down. [more]
If you’ve ever wondered about a simple, travel friendly time lapse setup, check this out. During his recent time in South Africa, Chase Jarvis was able to use four different cameras to capture time lapse sequences over the course of two hours. Not only does Chase break down the settings he uses, he also explains how time settings of his camera will translate to a final product at 24 fps.
Today’s Photo of the Day was taken by well known photographer Chase Jarvis. You can see more of his incredible work HERE, or check out his blog HERE.
We do what we do because we love it. We didn’t do this for fame, glory, or accolades. We are just a bunch of photo nerds, gear heads, and working pros who wanted to help others learn how to be better photographers. We learn something new every day, and we hope that you do too. So we were extremely surprised to find that we were just rated the #1 photography site by ExpertPhotography.com. [more]
