Mextures- A Story Behind Building the Perfect App for Photographers

Mextures- A Story Behind Building the Perfect App for Photographers

It was just a couple years into using Instagram myself before I noticed one name pop up regularly: Merek Davis. Having first been introduced to him as "The Mextures Dude," the fascination with him and the incredible inspriation he brought along with him had me hooked. I immediately began downloading free Mextures individually from his website and using apps like Image Blender to add them to my shots to enhance them with these magnificent colors, textures and custom film grains.

We've covered Mextures before here on Fstoppers, but I wanted to talk a bit more about the man and the history of the application. Early on, Merek's path to his current app started when he wanted to simply sell high res texture and film grain files he called Mextures to the top end photographers. Shortly after launching those and selling only a handful, he knew that wasn't quite the right formula.

He then went back to the drawing board, and began offering his textures in a mobile friendly size for use on Instagram. He offered the textures for free, asking only for people to tag #mextures in return, a tag that has now grown to over 700,000 uses. As the popularity grew, so did Mereks follower base along with a legion of people asking when he would release new mextures. Shortly thereafter, the rumors swirled about an app. He went through more than 20 developers tyring to find the best match for someone to create his dream app that would help photographers put a mobile Photoshop-like system in their pockets. Eventually meeting developer Wes Billman, Merek began building an app he and Wes would eventually make available in Apple's app store. The time and effort paid off big when soon after the app launched it hit the top of the charts and recognized as one of the best photo apps by Apple.

The app is for iPhone only and has been toted as one of the best photography apps on the market. Its simple timeline-esque UI gives you full control over how much you want to add to the image and has a large collection of Mextures to choose from, including light leaks, grain, grunge and graidents. The options give you full control over how much or how little you want to add to each image. The best part and one of the most unique pieces compared to the ever popular VSCOcam or Snapseed is the non-destructive feature. You can go back and edit each individual piece as on a timeline.

With most photo apps these days, it's one and done and if you don't like the edit you find yourself going back deleting the shot or starting from scratch. What Merek has done here is bring more freedom to the creative side of things with mobile editing. One of the biggest jumps for me personally was the addition of editing tools like contrast, saturation and sharpen. Having those paired with the custom Mextures makes it a perfect combonation.

Having the chance to meet Merek a couple years ago over dinner while shooting in Phoenix was an incredible experience. His passion for photography and building something greater for others was awe-inspiring. I have been following his work and progress in the app for the past two years and I will say this, the best is yet to come.

If you want even more of Merek Davis, Cult of Mac recently did an excellent interview with him that I highly recommend checking out.

Also be sure to check out both his website at MerekDavis.com along with both his personal and Mextures Instagram pages for some incredible photos by Merek and all the contributors.

Also be sure to check out his app available in the app store here!

I would love to see who in the community has used Mextures or has been adding to the growing tag #mextures on Instagram so please feel free to share your shots in the comments below.

Damn you Windows phone.. The app seems nice thought!

Thanks Rick! I wish I had some good news on the Windows Phone development front, but unfortunately, I don't. :(

Any chance an Android version is going to happen at some point? This looks like a wonderful app :)

Hi Marius! Although I cannot discuss our product timeline publicly as to when we will be making it available on Android, it is something we are actively pursuing to try and make it happen.

Hey Merek, any chance of any android app happening one of these days? Would love to have a go on this app, and don't have an iPhone.

Hi Mike! Glad to hear your interested in the app! I mentioned above that we are working on ways to bring the app to android while maintaining the same experience that is on the iPhone!

Totally LOVE Mextures, in fact I paid homage to it recently on my feed http://instagram.com/bellectronics (second to last pic).
Nice to see that they've quit their day jobs through the app, good on 'em :))
Mereks pictures are something else, too!

Hey Bob! Appreciate the kind words and the homage to Mextures! I sincerely love the community that has formed and being able to discover users like yourself that are creating a unique style. Bravo!

Agreed, great shots Bob.

Love Mextures! Super fun.

Thanks Troy! I'm glad to hear you're enjoying the app!

I've been so hooked on the VSCO app I haven't bothered looking into any other apps...
Think it's about time I give some others a shot. Definitely starting with Mextures, creative possibilities look endless O_o

Elliott, this is the one! I had been stuck on VSCO and Snapseed for the longest time and making the move over to Mextures has been nice. I am very minimalist with the textures and grain but it helps pop colors and contrast much better than the seemingly dark extremes of VSCO.

VSCO's app is incredible. They've done everything right and I have massive amount of respect for them individually and as a company. I like to think we take a little more free flowing creative path with the grunge/light leaks/grittiness of Mextures. I hope you enjoy it and can incorporate it into your workflow! We have a lot of users who start with Mextures, like you said, and then finish with toning in VSCO!

So pumped to see Merek Davis on my daily feed. Mextures 2 release was epic. I've used the original Dropbox series images a lot in video as well and they work beautifully. Keep up the excellent work! No pressure...haha. #killingit

Thanks Andy! Those were the good ol' days! :) Glad to hear you've been enjoying the 2.0 update. And I'm really excited you've used them in video! Would love to see some examples sometime.

This looks like an awesome app! I've just downloaded it, can't wait to start playing. Nice work Merek!

Can't wait to see what you create with it man, great little tool for any shooters.

Hey Thomas! Thanks for the support! I really hope you enjoy it. If you have any questions or feedback, you can personally reach me on here, or any other social network :)

this app looks amazing! hopefully it satisfy all photographer's needs in an iphone app. Downloading it at the moment. I will post my reviews later.

Can't wait to see what you think Tim! Its a great app and the tiem put into it shows with Mereks work. Thanks!
!

Hey Tim! Thanks so much for purchasing the app! I'm excited to hear your review/feedback. Feel free to message/email/contact me for any feedback or questions!

Seen it often. a small developer under pressure to support multiple platforms ends up diluting the amount of time available to continue innovation. Love mextures and I'd encourage Merek and his team to focus on continued development of the app rather than try to support other devices. Ducks.

Hey Richard! It definitely is a slippery slope and one that we've found ourselves on a number of times. I really would love everyone to try out this app on whatever device they have, but to make sure the experience is completely equal on both platforms is a top priority. It is something we are working on with another team, so we aren't diluting (hopefully!) our product timeline. Famous last words maybe? haha

I"ve been using snapseed but mexture's ability to save and share a formula has me interested.

Hi Savi! Snapseed is an incredible app. I love their spot adjustments. Powerful stuff. I think, and hope, you'll enjoy the sharing/saving feature. It's something I found missing in apps and my Photoshop/Lightroom workflow involves saving and re-using adjustments on similar pictures. I think we've brought a similar mindset with this app.

this looks ace!

Thanks Stian!

No news yet on the posibility of an android version? id love to have it

Were those images created only with Mextures app? Also wondering if there's a PSD export function, the day where you actually want to print them in large format.

I like the idea but not available on the iPad. Hopefully in the future. Not going to pay for an app that I have to run in 2x mode... But it does look very cool!
