Art in America’s Best Photography Exhibits 2012

Joshua Chuang, associate curator of photography and digital media at the Yale University Art Gallery, created a photography exhibit ‘Best of 2012′ list for Art in America magazine. While many of these are over, some can still be seen (but hurry, some end as soon as Monday!). Check to see if they’re in your area…

I was only able to see the Cindy Sherman exhibit myself at SF MOMA, but please comment if you’ve seen any on this list. I’m sure, as with the Sherman exhibit, they were all excellent. By visiting ArtinAmericaMagazine.com, you can find explanations of all the exhibits below:

“Light Years: Conceptual Art and the Photograph 1964–1977″ (Art Institute of Chicago, Dec. 13, 2011-Mar. 11)

“Paul Graham: The Present” (Pace Gallery, New York, Feb. 24–Apr. 21)

“Cindy Sherman” (Museum of Modern Art, New York, Feb. 26–June 11; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, July 14-Oct. 8)

“Rineke Dijkstra: A Retrospective” (SFMOMA, Feb. 18–May 28; Guggenheim Museum, New York, June 26-Oct. 8)

“Faking It: Manipulated Photography Before Photoshop” (Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, Oct. 11, 2012-Jan. 27, 2013) (We posted about this one earlier this year)

“Modernism or Modernity: Photographers from the Circle of Gustave Le Gray” (Petit Palais, Paris, Nov. 3, 2012–Jan. 6, 2013)

“War/Photography: Images of Armed Conflict and Its Aftermath” (Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, Nov. 1, 2012–Feb. 3, 2013)

“Photography in 100 Masterpieces” (Bibliothèque nationale de France, Paris, Nov. 13, 2012–Feb. 17, 2013)

Additionally, Chuang includes a list of exhibits he wished he had seen, one of which you can still catch if you’re in London:

“Snapshot: Painters and Photography, Bonnard to Vuillard” (The Phillips Collection, Washington, D.C., Feb. 4–May 6)

“Timothy O’Sullivan: The King Survey Photographs” (Nelson-Atkins Museum, Kansas City, Mo., Apr. 12–Aug. 26)

“Wish You Were Here: The Buffalo Avant-Garde in the 1970s” (Albright-Knox Art Gallery, Buffalo, N.Y., Mar. 30–July 8)

“Everything Was Moving: Photography from the 60s and 70s” (Barbican, London, Sept. 13, 2012–Jan. 13, 2013)
