Photographer Ingrid Berthon-Moine was born in France, works out of London and loves a man covered in hair more than Freddie Mercury ever could have. Okay, I don’t really know how she likes her men, but in 2010 she created a collection called “V” which features the glory of chest hair ranging from full bush to barely visible. In 1963, American photographer Melvin Sokolsky shot a gorgeous series for Harper’s BAZAAR of a model inside a giant plexi-glass bubble all around Paris. I can’t say enough about these images. They are timeless and even wow me today more than 50 years later. What a spectacularly executed concept that really draws you in and keeps you wanting for more. Well done Sokolsky, well done. Enjoy! So many times I have traveled abroad to find a fantastic location for a landscape photo, but the light is terrible or haze isn’t allowing for a beautiful view. Rushed schedules don’t typically lend much help for me to scout when I am in a new land, but no bother for Russian photographer, Boguslaw Strempel. This guy must be a master location scout, because he seems to know where all the gorgeous fog is and the light is brilliant in his Russian landscape shots. Enjoy! [more]
There’s nothing more beautiful than … a video of the destruction of an egg? Well, if you shoot said destruction video at 3,200 fps in a plethora of angles and situations it can be gorgeous. The guys at OverKranked have done just that. They’re specialty is showing the shredding, crushing, squashing, cracking, obliterating and deathing of every day items in slooow mooo. DesignWorks Media Group is made up of Mike Stog and Lee Barwick. The USA Olympic Boblsed/Skeleton team commissioned them to do a campaign which includes bobsledding fused with everyday activites, i.e. grocery shopping. Mike and Lee kept things pretty easy and minimal as far as lighting goes. They used a lot of the ambient, then supplemented for an extra kick where needed. Jordan Matter’s “Dancers Among Us” has been a wildly successful photo project that he has been working on for a couple of years now. The juxtaposition he achieves in his images of dancers that are off the stage and out on the street is fantastic. Even though in a technical aspect some of the photos aren’t all that great, the idea is powerful and has been featured in magazines, TV shows and countless blogs all over the globe. [more]
Photographer Jasmin Schuller has created a pretty rad little photo series called “Sweet Meat”. The final images consist of raw meats that are fashioned and styled to appear as desserts. I love this idea and yet again I have to kick myself and say, “Why didn’t I think of this?!” Jasmin has been exhibiting the collection all over and has been featured in Russian Esquire and De:bug. I’m sure PETA will want her to exhibit during their next gala. Enjoy!
London photog, Roman Sakovich, has created a short series of photos illustrating the effects of drug abuse on a person. Even though the makeup is a bit overdone at times (IMO), I think he did a great job at showing who the person was and what they became. These shots tell a good story and paint a real picture. Enjoy! Typically I am not a fan of timelapses or stop motion videos. However, sometimes I come across one that is done so well that I am left with no choice but to admire the beauty and creativity of it. Christophe Thockler is one of those magical people that have momentarily turned me from a hater of timelapses, to a lover of them. Christophe’s 4 minute 33 second video “Degiheugi – Un Jour comme un Autre” consists of more than 35,000 photos, 120 timelapses and 160 hours of shoot time.
Auckland based photog John Crawford has come up with a really interesting view on nude photography, aerial nudes. John’s use of composition and space in this series is what really draws attention to it. It is nude art done in a way that we wouldn’t typically expect to see it, and it is quite refreshing to see a new take on such an ancient form of artistic expression. Enjoy! [more]
London photog, Dave Kai-Piper, is one of my favorite people in the fashion photography industry. He is talented, driven, kind and a blast to work with. I got to meet Dave and his close friend/assistant/videographer, Paul McKelvie in England last year while shooting video for a web series and the 3 of us have been good friends since. Their video “Sequence 9″ is Dave and Paul’s effort to show the beauty in all forms in the world around us by bringing together timelapse photography and what I can only describe as “BTS-Fine-Art-Fashion” videography. Photog Abelardo Morell has an incredible series called “Camera Obscura”. In short, he shoots with a pinhole camera in a pitch black room with a tiny aperture and very long exposure. Then, he essentially turns the room into a giant pinhole camera chamber by drilling a small hole in the wall next to the camera. The outside light then projects an upside down image on the wall being photographed. Awesome sauce! Enjoy! [more]
