Jay P. Morgan Teaches You How To Balance Strobes and Daylight

Plus, he’s giving away an excellent Tamron 24-70mm SP f/2.8!

This is an incredibly informative video from The Slanted Lens that details an excellent way of shooting outdoors and balancing strobes with natural light. Some of these tricks were things that I actually never considered such as stopping down the camera and upping the flash to see exactly where the light was falling outside. Now that I think about it, it’s so simple that I should have been doing it from the start, but that’s why I love these videos!

Fstoppers Reviews: The Nero Trigger

Have you ever wondered how photographers capture bullets flying in mid air? Or get that perfect lightning strike in the middle of the day? Well the newly redesigned Nero Trigger will help you do just that. Short of the creative jolt you get when you upgrade from pop-up flash to a full off camera flash set up, I’d say that this is one of the biggest creative boosts I’ve gotten in a long time. This is a piece of gear worth having if you need to get the creative juices flowing again.

The Basics of a One Light Set Up: A Lighting Tutorial with Jay P. Morgan

Jay P. Morgan of The Slanted Lens has released a video that gives us a detailed look at one of the most basic aspects of portrait photography, the single light portrait. It’s a very basic technique, but it’s incredibly versatile set up that can be used to create many different looks. In this video, Jay P. Morgan is using a Canon 1DC and shooting video from which he will pull stills. It’s a different way of shooting than we might be used to, but the end results are can look a lot more natural than posed pictures as the model is given much greater freedom to move around.  [more]

Product Photography With A Bang: Photographing The BAR Machine Gun

A few weeks ago, the South Carolina Military Museum offered me the chance photograph some of their massive collection of World War II firearms, shooting for the excellent Curio and Relic Firearms website C&Rsenal, and I jumped at the chance. I’ve always been fascinated by antique firearms not because of their destructive capabilities, but because they are incredibly elegant machines that are very, very simple. So needless to say I was very excited to get the opportunity to “shoot” them.
