Rokinon, Samyang and Bower have been releasing some exciting new lenses the last few months! They have recently announced the Rokinon 8mm Fisheye f/3.5 for only $229, the $379 Bower 35mm f/1.4 and the Samyang 16mm f/2. While these are all manual focus lenses, optically they’re not bad for the money you’re putting out. Also, Olympus has just announced a 75mm f/1.8 lens for their Micro 4/3 mount. The Nikon 135mm f/2 DC is a bit of a gem in the portrait game but as the title might suggest, you might not have heard of this lens. This may be due to one of a few reasons: The primary being that it’s a reasonably old lens; it hasn’t been updated optically in its nearly 25 years in the Nikon lineup. Another being that even if you have heard of it, it’s probably because it has gotten a bad reputation as a “soft focus” lens due to its unique Defocus Control feature. [more]

Seriously though, I’ve seen a lot of crazy things done with the Red Epic, but I’ve never seen it shot without it’s IR pass filter. The results are the definition of ethereal. The biggest shocker to me though was that none of these shots, which included a very complicated Handheld to Rope to Handheld shot that looked like a crane shot, were all done without any post-stabilization or complicated steadicam rigs. All of the shots were done using the Movi stabilization system.
The average tilt shift lens is will set you back nearly 2 thousand dollars so the option to have a tilt shift lens for under $1000 from Rokinon and Samyang definitely makes me take notice. This is an incredibly informative video from The Slanted Lens that details an excellent way of shooting outdoors and balancing strobes with natural light. Some of these tricks were things that I actually never considered such as stopping down the camera and upping the flash to see exactly where the light was falling outside. Now that I think about it, it’s so simple that I should have been doing it from the start, but that’s why I love these videos!
