Jay P. Morgan of The Slanted Lens has released a video that gives us a detailed look at one of the most basic aspects of portrait photography, the single light portrait. It’s a very basic technique, but it’s incredibly versatile set up that can be used to create many different looks. In this video, Jay P. Morgan is using a Canon 1DC and shooting video from which he will pull stills. Product Photography With A Bang: Photographing The BAR Machine Gun

A few weeks ago, the South Carolina Military Museum offered me the chance photograph some of their massive collection of World War II firearms, shooting for the excellent Curio and Relic Firearms website C&Rsenal, and I jumped at the chance. I’ve always been fascinated by antique firearms not because of their destructive capabilities, but because they are incredibly elegant machines that are very, very simple. So needless to say I was very excited to get the opportunity to “shoot” them.

RED’s Dragon Sensor: 65mm Film’s Newest Rival

Film has always had an unmistakable feel to it that is difficult if not impossible to reproduce digitally, but the days of that being true may be numbered. RED, a company known for the EPIC line of digital cinema cameras has recently released the above test image from their newest sensor, Dragon and I’m stunned. With over 18 stops of dynamic range, Jim Jannard of RED has said that the new sensor shouldn’t even be compared to 35mm film.

These simply lit photographs are a lot of fun and it’s great to have a look at how they were made.
