[BTSV] The Incredible Environments of Disney’s John Carter

The new Disney flick John Carter certainly seems like a breath of fresh air to movie-goers everywhere. A unique concept, interesting storyline, and dazzling special effects are all coming together to make this one movie that I know I’ll be seeing on the big screen. Check out a behind-the-scenes video detailing the special effects handiwork that went into making this story a reality after the jump.

Hundreds of visual effects shots were required to bring this epic to the big screen, and most of them contained various elements all layered on top of one another to create the final scene. Artists at Double Negative, Cinesite, MPC and Nvizible worked tirelessly, placing green screen elements into computer generated landscapes and backdrops, which were then populated with live actors (who were also placed on a green screen and later composited in). Check out some images from the movie below: the attention to detail with regards to photorealistic lighting and compositing is impeccable.

Unfortunately, we weren’t able to embed the video, so you’ll have to click here to see the video and commentary, or click on any of the images below. I am always amazed at how much time and creativity goes into making a big-budget movie with a lot of computer generated effects. While we’ve come a long way from the days of Star Wars where every single prop was built by hand for the movie, it seems that there is just as much clever thinking and puzzle solving today as there was 30 years ago.

That behind the scenes footage did not look that great to me. I think the special effects look meh? Anybody?

They are called VISUAL effects not SPECIAL effect! Special effect are in-camera effects (Optical and mechanical) Visual effects are made during the Post-Production process!
Please don’t take it wrong! I’m a compositor myself and I’m a little bit allergic to those kind of confusions ;)

He looked a bit too well lit when flying on that thing at the end. Didn’t match the sun. The film reminds me of Star wars.
