Photography is an enormous, multifaceted industry that ranges from portrait and product to macro and landscape. As photographers, we owe it to ourselves to learn as much as we can about each specific genre of our trade. Even if you only shoot weddings or cars, it’s important to learn and practice new techniques, which will allow you to hone your skills and can keep you out of creative ruts. Recently, I have had the opportunity to take on several types of shoots that I either have never done before or have had very limited experience with.
As photographers we love to photograph beautiful people. We get excited when hired to shoot models with perfect dimensions, gorgeous lines and stunning eyes. While those shoots get the heart racing the ones that really fill my heart are the ones when I see photographers reach out and photograph those that wouldn't otherwise find themselves in front of a professional's camera. One such shoot was from Nathaniel Taylor who each year donates his time and resources to photograph and give prints to disabled adults.
A few weeks ago we featured a really whimsical BTS of a shoot from the team at PHLEARN, and this week we have something from them that's edgier and totally different. They took brightly colored beetles (that were framed as art prior to the shoot) and used them in conjunction with colored lipstick for a really sweet final result: Beetle Beauty.
At 43 years old, No Doubt frontwoman Gwen Stefani poses for Annie Leibovitz for the January cover of Vogue magazine looking spectacular. A short behind the scenes video of the shoot was shared. While there is no instructional content in the 3 minute video it is interesting to get a behind the scenes peek into the shoot and see how the different sets are put together. While most of the shoot was of Gwen wearing some amazing threads, her band did make a cameo appearance in some of the shots.
I’m driving a beautiful triple-black Aston Martin DB9 V12 down a florida highway. Its nose so long that the sun striking it practically blinds me. AC/DC is blasting on the radio and the car’s 12 cylinders roar at the slightest touch to the throttle. One client has loaned me his beautiful British exotic so I could drive 90 minutes away to briefly meet another private client about photographing his multi-million dollar Bugatti supercar collection. Surreal, right? This sort of experience has become sort of commonplace for me recently, but it never becomes any less mind-blowing. Sometimes I just sit and wonder: how did I even get here? This is just crazy.
We recently came upon this gallery of before-and-after images of a few well known celebrities as seen in fashion magazines and large scale advertising campaigns. These are, it would seem, examples of just how far an image can be taken in post to make it usable for publication or advertising use. I have been following Luke Schneider's work for quite some time and it just keeps getting better and better. He has a nack for fashion photography and it clearly shows. I decided to find out a bit about him and what his goals are for the future and current project. He is still in college so he has quite a bit of time ahead of him to achieve his goals. From the looks of it, he is well on his way there.
In this corporate headshot shoot by The Slanted Lens, Jay P Morgan plays around with a 10, 20 and 30 degree grid to show us how each one will give a drastically different look. Throughout the entire shoot he is constantly feathering the light. If you've ever shot on the streets of New York then you'll understand why he has to keep his set up very mobile.
When I watched this video this morning from London-based film production company Make Productions my mind was blown, my jaw dropped and I just kept thinking about all the detailed work that went into creating such an amazing parallax sequence - all of which was executed perfectly. With a well thought out idea and fantastic execution, Max Riche managed to win several awards with this photo series. The concept was to capture the progression of amateur's journey into professional athleticism in one photo. He was thoughtful enough to video several of his shoots and explain the process that led to these well recognized photos.
