It’s that time of the year again when all of our favorite photo gear goes on sale. We plan to post sales all day long on our Facebook and Twitter page but for the best deals like the one below, we will post them on Fstoppers. Online sales sometimes only last a few minutes so we will be pulling posts down once the deal is no longer available. Currently the Nikon P7000 is 50% off at Amazon.
I’ve always wondered what who actually took the amazing images that come with our operating systems to be used as desktop wallpaper. I’ve never seen a name or heard a story about how they got the shot. Sadly I still don’t have the story but we do have a face. Someone just sent me this image of the guy that took the shot that came with every Windows XP machine back in the day. Does anyone know who this is? Let us know in the comments below.
Now despite the way this apparatus looks, it’s actually something that has been discussed by major photo industry companies. Event photographers continually struggle with needing to have their lighting equipment in just the right spot while simultaneously needing to be somewhere else to get the shot. Even if they do get everything in place, seconds later they will need to somewhere else. In the current economic slump, not everyone can afford an assistant, so what can you do? Build yourself a strobist backpack, that’s what.
Howdy and welcome to the Wednesday Rundown. This week we have a flying bride video. With the help of a trampoline and some creative ideas these brides become weightless in all white. Check out the short animated film that comes to life from folded paper. If you have a video that you think we might like to post, please click on “submit content” above.

We also have a swimsuit shoot at the Santa Monica pier. If you have a video that you think we might like to post, please click on “submit content” above.
Patrick and I are currently in Peter’s studio putting the finishing touches on his DVD and all three of us will be coming out tonight to the meetup. This Fstoppers get-together will be “Las Chicas Locas” at 160 West 25th Street where we have met before. The owner is reserving the bar/restaurant just for us, so let’s try to pack it out. Everyone is welcome no matter what level photographer you consider yourself, and the party begins at 9pm. Hope to see you guys there.
Laptop makers Lenovo have released a new series of laptops that they claim can startup in less than 10 seconds. The new ThinkPad T420s and IdeaPad Y570 are using a new technology called Rapidboot which they claim makes their computers boot up faster than any other computer on the market. Lenovo teamed up with the ad agency McKinney to prove just how fast their Windows 7 computers can start. The idea was to throw a laptop out of a plane at 12,500 feet and see if it could trigger the parachute after loading Windows. Check out the behind the scenes video below and then head over to the full post to watch the final commercial. I’d love to see Apple run a marketing campaign like this!
You feel butterflies in your stomach, adrenalin in your viens and joy in your heart. As a photographer this means you either just fell in love OR you just got, “the shot”. Marc Montocchio of Occhioinc.com sent me his video of how he fell in love… no wait, of how he got the shot, shown below. Come to think of it, he does seem pretty obsessed with marlin so it’s hard to tell either way.
