Even if you have never shot pictures underwater before, I bet it has crossed your mind. I know I’ve tried it a few times and failed miserably. One thing I love about running a website like Fstoppers is that I am introduced to all sorts of photography I would never have come across on my own. Such is the case with professional wave photographer Clark Little (you must check out his website). I owe a thanks to my dad who first told me about Clark’s work and now we have a video that shows what it is like to be directly in contact with a huge wave crashing over you. If Clark comes across this post, we’d love to see a formal behind the scenes made with interviews and some information about how your approach to ‘wave photography’ has evolved. Perhaps Fstoppers needs to head out to Hawaii this spring!
As a commercial wedding photographer, I know very little about how to take compelling underwater images. Luckily underwater photographer Brian Skerry and National Geographic have shared this short BTS video on what it’s like diving with fish and swimming over coral reefs. I think it’s interesting how simple but necessary the lighting setup is for this field of photography; most of us “land photographer” probably take for granted the complex lighting setups we can easily construct. Most of us also don’t bring “backup gear” to our shoots because we expect our gear to break! Hopefully we will see more videos like this from other underwater photographers.

He has recently been working with Speedo for their summer catalog, and the production that goes into these shoots is insane. I’m always interested in underwater photoshoots because I’ve failed miserably trying to do my own underwater shoots in the past. I was happy when I came across this video created by Speedo where they show you exactly how they came up for their new 2010 print ad campaign. It’s a shame they don’t showcase photographer Martin Brent more than they do but they do a great job showing how the idea was first created and the process of going from idea to final rendering.
Well it took a few weeks but we have finally received our first contest submission. Dave Gruentzel Photography of Photofide.com has created a solid BTS video of their latest underwater shoot. A few days ago I posted Patrick’s video of his friends jumping on a trampoline in the desert… I just ran across his skim boarding video on vimeo and I am once again smiling while I watch his work. You want to know how he did it? Simple; he put a GoPro HD Hero on a monopod and threw it around in the ocean. Love it!
Dom Daher is an extreme sport photographer. If you’ve ever wondered what it would be like to have to shoot commercial photos while avoiding crashing waves and aggressive surfers then this video should wet your appetite.
Mick Gleissner has been featured in Elle, Maxim, Seaster, and Photo Magazine with his surreal underwater fashion images. This is one of the coolest videos I’ve personally watched and hope you guys enjoy it as well. Maybe our own Fstoppers writer Lee Morris can take a note or two out of MG’s book of tricks.
I spend most of my time in Charleston, SC and NYC. It was February and Charleston was uncomfortably cold and NYC was unbearably cold. I had some free time so I decided to fly down to Placencia Belize and learn to scuba dive. As a photographer I wanted to get some cool photography as well.
