              Color Blind Landscape Photographer

Check out these stunning landscapes shot by a color blind photographer. Kilian Schönberger is a 28 year old photographer from Germany who can’t distinguish green and red, leaving him color blind. It appears that most of these were shot in Iceland. I can’t imagine some of the hiking and backbacking that has to be done to achieve some of these shots, but they are well worth it. Kilian shoots with a 5D Mark II and uses a 24mm TSE II lens. Go to his 500px for more of his work.

CAN YOU IMAGINE WHAT HIS PHOTOS WOULD LOOK LIKE IF HE WAS NOT COLOR BLIND !!!!!!!!!!!!!

              • http://www.facebook.com/gunnar.rathbun Gunnar Rathbun

color blindness really doesn’t lessen their abilities at all.. I have a friend/videographer who is color blind and shoots everything just fine.. it really doesn’t seem to affect them since they are used to it.. and you have tools in photoshop that let you use the eye dropper to see the true color if he really can’t distinguish a specific shade
None the less these photos are amazing! great find!

              • http://profiles.google.com/kalavere Chris Popely

…You do realise he is colour blind to the colours red & GREEN… Right?

Awesome, brilliant and amazing! Some of them looks like HDR.

              • DafOwen

Ha – these photos would look just the same ;P

              • DafOwen

Similarly – have a Pro friend who’s the same.

Mind you – he is keen on very “over” saturated colours/hues and we once had to point out to him that his sun was green.

Agreed.  Some of these are definitely funky fresh and Id love to know more about his workflow and what he is shooting with but the HDR has become less appealing in the last few years for me.  And that is how you craft a very long sentence and this is how you end a sentence without a period

              • Bob Mackowski

Being colorblind doesn’t affect photography all that much unless you’re completely colorblind (which this photographer apparently isn’t.  I’m partially colorblind and have problems with some shades of blue looking black.  I can shoot just fine… I just need help matching my socks before weddings.

That said, these are awesome images.

              • http://www.facebook.com/michael.crees Michael Crees

I have the same type of color blindness and I agree with deanr222.  If you want to oversaturate your photos so be it.  Photography is HIGHLY subjective but don’t cop out your editing choices with claiming that you are color blind.  I have never had somebody tell me that my images were weird colors when I was trying to make them look natural.  And I fail the dot colorblind test horribly!  Good pics but like I said don’t use excuses.

              • Mbutu Namubu

My understanding is that folks with red/green color blindness have no problem distinguishing yellow/blue and black/white. It would be reasonable to assume that the photographer has a heightened awareness of the contrast between lights and dark tones and also yellow/blue.

The photos are very interesting because they display a very strong emphasis on the yellow and blue and this is especially apparent in the 3rd photo down from top of the series. BTW – most of the greens in the photo series lean to the yellow, so the photographer might be seeing yellow there instead of green.

                just some thoughts

              • Domagoj Kunic

                speechless

              • http://www.facebook.com/jackson.vanwie Jackson Craig Van Wie

Exactly, I am color blind too, but looking natural to me is the same to anyone elce. The only time colorblindness comes into play is if someone was to see the world through my eyes then it would look differently.

              • http://profiles.google.com/simon.lynchsae Simon Lynch

                WOW!

I’d really like to see the pictures the way HE sees it. Like somone not color blind would edit them to make us see as if we were.

I have this color deficiency too.. I wouldnt call it color blindness per se because it sounds like one would be able to only see in black and white.. For some reason these photos look perfectly balanced color wise maybe because I see it the same way the photographer sees them? not sure but an interesting thought… its nice to know that Im not the only one here with this deficiency

              • Satya Varghese Mac

he doesn’t really, He says he pictures “natural” the same as everyone else.

First off, insane imagery and kudos.  I am also Red/Green colorblind and I have always been very self-conscious of this in the professional world, and I am happy to see someone who has embraced it.  I think the way everyone sees the world around them and through the lens is different and that’s what makes photographers different.  In this case I think Kilian has a great sense of composition and light.  His photographs are dramatic and stunning. Great work.

Sorry to point it out to you, but he doesn’t use HDR… I’ve been following his work for quite some time and he posts his workflow in a german community. No HDR, just amazing photography skills!
