DCP Productions Puts the Geico Money Man into HDR Video

If you watch TV shows through any medium, there’s a decent chance you’ve seen Geico’s new Money Motorcycle Man. DCP Productions was kind enough to give a little behind the scenes on how they utilized 3D capture technology to video the money man and give him an HDR look. While the HDR effect has been explored extensively in the arena of stills, using it in video with 3D technology is quite innovative.

Actually looks great. Doesn’t some of the RED cameras have a built in HDR mode? Have a memory of Vincent Laforet showing the difference in some woods.
Why can’t photographer use this method like this?

Peter Hjorth has done some great HDR video work for Lars Von Trier. The prologues of both Antichrist and Melancholia are some pretty stunning examples. I believe for Antichrist he said it was more about saving on lighting since they were doing such high speed photography, but not sure if it was the same reasoning for Melancholia or if by then they had stylistically liked the look.

I wouldn’t call Melancholia a movie anymore than I would 2001: A Space Odyssey. It’s more of a work of art, told in a series of moving pictures :-)

What’s up with the terrible frame rate effect on this video? It almost looks like that weird motion smoothing filter they put into LCD tvs in the last few years. Makes the commercial unwatchable.
