Empowering Children Through Photography

100cameras.org has to be one of the coolest photography related projects I've seen. The children in this program live in poverty but are given the opportunity to help improve their communities by sharing their stories through photography. Their photos help us understand the difficult conditions more than 1 billion children live in, world wide. The photos are for sale online and 100% of the proceeds go back to that child's community. You can check out some of their work on Instagram and if you think this idea is half as cool as I do you should purchase a print, donate some cold hard cash, adopt a camera or volunteer your time.

I can't remember when I spotted this on Instagram but it was incredible to see the community come together on IG to promote this via their pages all over the country. There is also a photo exhibition helping this same organization raise money called 100-50-1 selling portraits from the top 50 photographers on Instagram using nothing but their mobile devices to take the shots. You can find more here but such a cool idea and a great cause! http://www.100-50-1.is/

I volunteered with a gallery for 2 years doing projects very similar to this. We went out into the communities in our city and worked with youth in schools and community schools with both young and older kids. They took photos with the cameras we provided and they created photo journals. Some of the stories and things they would write, were pretty moving, like bring you to tears moving. But they absolutely loved getting a chance to express themselves! Just serves a reminder when I hear people downplay the arts in comparison to science and math as a necessity in schools, I beg to differ. They're all necessary. Self expression: definitely necessary.
