Fstoppers Original: Peter Hurley’s The Art Behind The Headshot Is Live

After almost a year of work we have finally finished Peter Hurley: The Art Behind The Headshot. We created this to be a double DVD tutorial and we may eventually still make a physical copy but for now we have decided to begin with a digital download. I would like to thank each one of you that supported us by pre-ordering this video and I am so sorry it took so long to produce. Patrick and I filmed and edited this and it was far more complicated than we ever imagined. Creating this video has been the hardest project I have ever worked on but at the same time one of the most rewarding.

During the 5 days of filming this video Peter completely opened my eyes to a new way of shooting people. Peter helped me look past the technical side of the camera and the lighting to see the emotion and feeling that each of his clients were producing in each image. When his clients weren’t producing compelling images, Peter knew exactly how to coach them into creating that perfect “look.” This experience has changed my photography more profoundly than any other experience in my life and I hope that everyone who watches this video will feel the same way.

Fstoppers is full of new and free information every single day including the first video we did with Peter over a year ago. This video was created with the professional photographer in mind and it costs $300 for a digital download of the 4 hour video. We know that many of our readers are photography hobbyists and if you don’t shoot professionally you may not see the value in this download and that is fine. Please realize that this is a tool and a piece of education that will help (some) professionals take their business to the next level. If you don’t see the value in it, please do not buy it and enjoy all of the other free material on our site. If you do decide to buy this video, I would like to thank you so much for supporting this venture and Fstoppers.com. Never in a million years would I have thought we (two wedding photographers from South Carolina) could have created a 4 hour tutorial of this complexity. I know we will never make enough money from DVD sales to make up for the time spent producing it (for some reason we thought it would only take a few weeks to edit) but I hope that this video will impact the photographers who watch it in a huge way.

congratulations guys… looks like a LOT of hard work and $300 is reasonable… I am def going to try to make this purchase.

              • http://www.rlmorris.com Lee Morris

Thanks Robbie. I hope you enjoy it!

This DVD covers my one of my big weak spots. That being said, 4 and a half hours left on this download…

              • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=37514348 Pratik Naik

Completely brilliant, really glad you guys made this. It was worth the sheer time spent putting it together.

              • http://www.rlmorris.com Lee Morris

Not only was this a weak spot for me, it was non existent in my shooting before I filmed this. Even while filming this Peter was so over my head because I’ve never modeled and never thought about this stuff. It took days before I started to get it and it may take you watching it a few times before it really starts to sink in. Keep an open mind, it’s very different than your average photography tutorial.

              • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=563353245 Olivier Borgognon

Hi guys, great teaser for the dvd… looks really great. Nonetheless do you think it would be possible to have short exerpts to see the real content and not the whole marketing pitch behind it? Don’t get me wrong, no criticism as i feel that part is really well done, but bits of the real thing make it clear to us future customers :)

                thanks a lot,

              • http://www.facebook.com/nicholas.gonzalez3 Nicholas Gonzalez

Incredible! This will probably be the most important DVD I will ever purchase. It reaffirms the importance of a photographer to know that a good image depends on the photographer, not the gear. I can’t wait!

              • Chris Blizzard

It looks like exactly what I’ve been wanting.   There are enough tutorials on the basics of lighting that it’s pretty easy to figure out, but interacting with your subject, and making them look their best still eludes me.

It’s a little out of my budget at the moment, but I hope it sells well for you.   Maybe one day my budget for these kinds of things will go up, at which point this will be one of my first stops.

Great teaser !! … I can see people rushing

I shouldn’t. But i’m gonna buy it. Why? One: I love the work of Peter Hurley. Two: I already learned so much in here for free, that it seems only fair.

                Thx guys!

Lee…I went to Peter’s first headshot intensive and this was included in the package. Where can I download this? Thanks!

              • http://www.patrickhallphotography.com Patrick Hall

Every shot you see in the promo besides Lee and I are from the tutorial. You should be able to get an idea oh the type of content from watching Peter in this promo….only we’ve saved the best stuff for the full download

              • Sebastian M

Looking forward to buying this DVD.  I’m sure there is a lot to learn from this and also purely to help support this site.  What format is the DVD?  Can I resume a download?  I’m overseas and don’t have the most stable internet connection.  Thanks guys!

              • http://www.rlmorris.com Lee Morris

It is 2, 2gb files and you can resume each one up to 5 times over the course of 48 hours. If you have any issues at all we can renew your download time.

You guys need to include this dvd in the behind the scenes contest!

              • Sebastian M

                Thanks Lee.  Purchased!

              • http://www.patrickhallphotography.com Patrick Hall

Not a bad idea….hopefully that isn’t all that’s keeping you from entering though :)

              • http://www.patrickhallphotography.com Patrick Hall

We didn’t mention this but you can see it in the promo, the Tutorial has interviews with Peter about business and photography questions, 7 full sessions with real paying clients, Peter commentary about what is REALLY happening during those sessions, post session recaps, and finally a full length tutorial on how to achieve Peter Hurley lighting with Kino Flos as well as 3 other Strobe light alternative setups including one with only one light and no modifiers!  Hope that helps

I am thinking to buy the DVD.
Still available the 300$ discount coupon for the workshops?

              • http://www.rlmorris.com Lee Morris

No I’m sorry that is only for those who pre-ordered and they really deserved it because we thought this video would have been released months ago. They have been extremely patient while we finished this thing up.

              • http://twitter.com/kitos Marcos Mtz. de Irujo

                Thanks!

What format are the files?  Are they DVD video or quicktime?

                mp4 video

              • http://twitter.com/nickshek Nick Shek

I can’t wait to watch this! The most expensive DVD I have ever bought but hopefully also the most rewarding. I would’ve preferred a hard copy though…

              • http://www.facebook.com/people/Wouter-van-der-Linde/1118709648 Wouter van der Linde

Nope its not, I’m gonna make it as informative as possible!
I’m gonna make a serie about uniform jobs, already shot 4 mechanics and 4 fire fighters, both filmed!
Hopefully I’m going to shoot 4 divers this sunday!
Hope you guys are looking forward too my edit. :)

Is it just me or is the sound sometimes overdriven?

              • http://www.patrickhallphotography.com Patrick Hall

The audio sounds great on every system we have played it on.  Every now and then you get some rustling from the lav mics or a random low pop noise but that’s expected when filming a live photoshoot.

Edit: I’m speaking of the full version, not the promo Lee addressed below

              • http://www.rlmorris.com Lee Morris

It is clipping in parts on the promo because I edited in a compressed version of the DVD and raised the levels to match the interview. It doesn’t clip in the full dvd.

              • Anonymous

Okay, great! Looking forward to it.

                Cheers!

              • http://twitter.com/LetsGoDSLR Let’s Go DSLR

I’m one of those hobbyists mentioned in the main post, but I enjoyed that trailer and actually learnt something from it.

Also, Peter Hurley is such a Dude.

              • http://www.patrickhallphotography.com Patrick Hall

the truth of the matter is Lee and I both know some amazing photographers who only consider themselves hobbyists (some take better photos than many pros I know).  I would say that if you want to improve the photos you take of people and have the money (as an investment or simply as a hobby), you will not be disappointed by this DVD.  Some of it might be over your head if you haven’t mastered the basics but anytime you get to learn directly from a top professional in his field I don’t think you can ever say it wasn’t worth being there.

              • http://twitter.com/RonaldVidnPhoto Ronald Stewart

I really wished I had held off on buying the Life Finders DVD for just a couple weeks. I’m still in college so that obviously set me back a bit. I can’t wait to get this DVD, I love all of his work.

what kind of portrait photographer doesn’t direct their model..  and charge $300 for it? get out of here.

              • http://twitter.com/mikepalangio Mike Palangio

WANT THIS!!!! Just finish up paying for the bazillion other things that being a full time photography student entails. Maybe this will be a graduation gift to myself. Great work to everyone involved.

              • http://www.facebook.com/jerinthebox Jeremy Lusk

They’re charging $300 for 4 hours of insights from a guy who charges $1200 for his sessions. This sort of investment pays for itself very quickly.

Lee & Pat it looks like you guys did a fantastic job with this.

              • Deep J singh

Lee PLEASE put it on iTunes! will buy it Right-Away! I love the convenience of being able to download the purchase even after years just in-case you loose it.

Hey Lee is it possible to get a code to download the video so i can review for http://www.photographySILO.com i think my readers would love to learn about it. To get an idea of the quality of my reviews check out the review i did for Lowepro’s PR Agency http://photographysilo.com/product-review/lowepro-photo-sport-200-aw/ Thanks in advance!

              • http://www.rlmorris.com Lee Morris

We will look into it although I’m sure that Apple wants a huge commission.

              • Chris Blizzard

I’m sure most do, but are they getting everything they can out of the model?   If you don’t know what pose will wuit them, how can you pose them?   What do you look for?   It may be out of my budget, but I’d say it’d probably be worth the money at double the price.

              • Duncan Bell

Part One download is a disaster at 14hrs, Part Two whistled down in parallel at 1.5hours.  One interrupted P1 download wouldn’t allow continuation at about 80% so I had to restart…..14 hours to go.  Urgh.

Really looking forward to the content though and the above is only a reflection on the delivery of the product.
