AN ASTONISHING PHOTO PROJECTJason deCaires Taylor is a sculptor who has taking his art to new depths, literally. Working with concrete, Jason creates artificial reefs by submerging his art underwater. The sculptures themselves are brilliant but when coupled with the alien environment and all the new life that emerges as a result of his works, the photos produced are nothing short of astonishing. This story is, again literally, so four months ago but I couldn’t risk any of our readers missing out on it. See more about his project in this post on TwistedSifter and check out Jason’s home page.

HOW WELL DO YOU SEE COLOR?“FACT: 1 out of 255 women and 1 out of 12 men have some form of color vision deficiency. Take the online color challenge, based on the official FM100 Hue Test by X-Rite.”

When I read this my first reaction, as a photographer and a male one at that, was “Am I seeing color accurately?” 1 out of 12 men have some form of color deficiency!? The thought bothered me, so of course I had to take the test and I did... twice. I managed to get a “0″ (perfect score) both times, with much relief. How do you stack up? Are you shooting the world through rose colored glasses or you’re very own special hue? We here at Fstoppers are curious, so, take this test and leave a comment of your results.

STREET PHOTOGRAPHY OR PERVERSION?We all know they are out there. The “photographers” who got into the business just to shoot bikinis and nudes or short skirts on the street and claim it’s for art. But then there are the other guys and gals out there who are legit, conscientious and courteous. And for them, stories, sensationalized by media such as WBZ-TV’s “Downtown Crossing ‘Street Photographers’ Crossing The Line?“, by Jim Armstrong, hurts us all. To show the other side of WBZ-TV’s story, Joe Gallo, who was in the interview, created a new site, “The Photo Recession”. The site features some of Joe’s thoughts and images, related to this controversy. Watch WBZ-TV’s video, peruse Joe’s site and let us know what camp you reside in.

PANORAMA PHOTOS ON YOUR IPHONEIt’s cool and it’s free. Gizmodo’s App of the Day for April 22nd is the interactive panorama and capture app, Photosynth. I personally tried this app out and it’s pretty keen (as long as your subjects are all under similar lighting conditions). You simply pan around , up and down, to any area you wish to capture and the app will stitch the image areas together. Give it a try.

KIDS REENACTING MORBID NEWS“Photographer and art director Jonathan Hobin has created a jarring series titled, In the Playroom, that makes us question what our children’s brains are soaking in through the ever-pervasive modern media.”

This clever and thought provoking series almost seems whimsical despite its serious content. It is a must see, so tune into My Modern Met’s, Alice, as she blogs yet another great post. And you can find more by Jonathan here.

CANON TROUNCES NIKON Ok, let’s be honest. There isn’t any real difference between the two systems. Nothing significant any how but being a minority Canon user in the Fstoppers crew I’m always down for creating a bit of friendly rivalry with my Nikon brethren.
That being said, Canon Rumors reports that Canon dominated the DSLR global market shares for 2010 at 44.5% vs Nikon’s 29.8%. Canon was also named the “Best Professional Lens” for the Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L II IS USM and the “Best DSLR Entry Level” for the Canon EOS Rebel T3i by the TIPA Awards 2011. On the flip side Nikon Rumors announced that the Nikon D7000 and Nikon COOLPIX P300 won Best Advanced DSLR and Best General Camera.

MEMORY CARD ESSENTIAL TIPSPhoto Focus lays down 15 essential memory card tips for Photographers, that many of you may find helpful. One that I’d like to add is: if you ever put a card in your camera and find it not working, don’t put it in another, as there maybe something lodged in one of the card’s ports. This has been known to cause bent pins in cameras, an expensive thing to repair.
