Fine art photographer George Tice is a master craftsman of the medium and the documentary "George Tice: Seeing Beyond the Moment" explores his rise from family portraitist to accomplished artist and educator. The film, which is available on IMDB in its entirety, was successfully funded through director Bruce Wodder's Newstreetfilms via a Kickstarter campaign. It is an evocative look at the American landscape through the lens of one of the 20th Century's greatest photographers.
Tice has published over 18 books of photography and his work is held in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, the Metropolitan Museum and the Art Institute of Chicago. He has instructed at the Maine Photographic Workshops since 1977 and is the recipient of grants from the Guggenheim and the National Endowment for the Arts. The list of Tice mentees is long and includes fine art photographers Sally Mann, Jack Leigh, Tim Barnwell, James Perry Walker and Brian Lav.
A retrospective of Tice's work "Seeing Beyond the Moment: The Photographic Legacy and Gifts of George Tice" is currently exhibited through March 2, 2014 at the Newark Museum in New Jersey. Very well made film. I just found another b/w photographer to add to the list of people who's work I admire and some new books to go look out for.
