Highly Unusual Photos of Fireworks Using Focus-Pulling

Photographer David Johnson decided that photographing fireworks the normal way was too boring. Instead, he refocused on the exploding fireworks at different points during a long exposure. The results more bring to life the Japanese word for “firework: hanabi, which translates to “fire flower.”

“The technique I used was a simple refocus during the long exposure. Each shot was about a second long, sometimes two. I’d start out of focus, and when I heard the explosion I would quickly refocus, so the little stems on these deep sea creature lookalikes would grow into a fine point. The shapes are quite bizarre, some of them I was pleasantly surprised with.”

If he’s anything like me, he probably bumped it by accident, chimped, then went “Whoaa!!!”

                …yeah.

My friend wrote a guide on how to do this several years ago. It’s on flickr here… http://www.flickr.com/groups/focusblur/discuss/72157612032060052/

I did this on my previous 4th of July Celebration and it was amazing. Focus/Zoom racking, even long exposure ‘swinging’. All that fun stuff

They look like glass blowing effects. I like to use this effect too. You can get it when you are moving faster than the object you are shooting. Try shooting from a car in low light.
