A good photographer should have an arsenal of tools, and should be able to make a great picture no matter in which condition you are and which tools you have in your hand. This can be an iphone or point&shoot what ever. It is all about the photos no matter how you make them. You can see how zack arias made great pictures with a point and shoot http://www.petapixel.com/2012/07/23/zack-arias-attempts-pro-photos-with-a-cheap-camera/ (not to mention that he used off camera flash, oups). I think the problem is most of the enthusiastic amateur photographers originate from gearheads who has a middle age crisis and discover the cameras and lenses as their new toys (including me). However by the time passes and you get more into photographical aspects, you realize the truth. I believe that good gear does not make a good photographer, however gear is always a limitation for a good photographer who knows what he can do and how he can do.

its
not about the camera or the gear, it’s about the photographer and their
vision, the ability to provoke emotion with an image. i’ve seen amazing work come off
of both an iphone and a pro camera and i’ve seen some tragic work. the only thing that destroys the profession of photography in my opinion
is doing work for free.

To clarify, my point was not that gear doesn’t matter. I mentioned that “I have whittled my gear list down to the bare essentials and wouldn’t go to a job without every light and lens.” That is the truth. But I have zero qualms about posting a shot taken with my phone on my photo blog, along with my images taken with pro gear.

I agree to a certain extent. But try taking a beautiful, crisp and nicely exposed image in a dark church with your iphone or use it to trigger off camera flashes on a dark evening. There is a certain bar in photography that camera phones etc are catching up to. Like the example you use at the top of the page, but eventually you do need the gear in order to capture great images.

For many types of photography, gear is important if you want to achieve the best images you can, especially for paying clients. Sports and Weddings are just two.
