I am further put off that he has “Tutorials” on DVD for sale.

For an example of better work you do not have to look very far !

Fabian, click and read Joey’s whole blog post… you’ll see the ARRI light setup. Fstoppers didn’t highlight any of the hotlight images… even though those were my favorite.

Where do you guys see the Arri light? I believe its a profoto head and its jus a behind the scene type of shot… Also for an Arri that puts out that much power 2-3k that Rotalux wouldn’t be able to handle the heat..

The toys and techniques they use in the movie industry are amazing. On one of our small sets, the DP set up this theater style light which had a gobo holder and lens elements, so that it projected a pattern that very much resembled light coming though window blinds. And a dozen+ white/black flags of all sizes…

hell yeah they heat up a room. i’ve recently been working as a BTS photog on a movie set. there was a scene being shot in an old (no air conditioning) church, lit all around with ARRI lights. i was wiping sweat from the camera more than i was shooting. lol. there was also a scene were they were using an ARRI 4K. Holy crap! Talk about bright. Think I was shooting at 1/1,000,000 , ISO 1 at f/166 and still getting clipped highlights! haha.
it was actually quite the learning experience to see how the scenes were lit with these large powerful lights, covering big areas. The DP was no joke.

I have never used fluorescent bulbs - just Arri’s and Chimera’s – do you have to be careful with your shutter speed to avoid flicker? Oddly enough, DSLR’s have been a limiting factor on many of the shoots I’ve been on. The downsampling of a 5d2′s sensor to 1080p tends to accentuate moire patterns on fine meshes. :/

I’d much rather light a set with some ARRI’s than the crap fluorescent continuous lights that usually get pawned off to photographers.

really like Joey L’s work and I really like the last setup with the ARRI hotlight.
