The slowest is the library module, where it takes forever to zoom in and display 100% : it's faster in the develop module. Generating 1:1 previews is not an option in my workflow, it just takes forever. And my Mac is as fast as can be : last generation, fastest i7 CPU, updated system, SSD, filled with RAM etc. Now it's Aperture that wins the crown, by far ! But only in terms of speed. Too bad... Anyway, I now edit / select in Nikon View NX, which is absolutely instantaneous (to display the control JPGs of the raw files) - so no need to wait for a single second, even for my D800E files - then each pic gets its stars (or not), etc. Sooooo much faster than editing in LR. I now only use LR to develop and tweak the RAW files + export, once they have been selected in VNX. When wil they (Adobe) produce a real "performance" update ? Come on guys !!! PLEASE !!!

For me too it’s really very slow. If you use the keyboard shortcuts to switch modules (G for library, D for develop), then you can do this pretty quickly.Rendering 1:1 photos does help, but it is still slower when switching photos in develop, than in library.

One of the 4.x updates did speed up the performance for me, but it is still slower than it should be.

One trick I learned is to browse photos in the Library module, as it renders them faster than in the develop module. In my case I don't have any problems working on very large files with multiple layers in PS6 but adjusting exposure in LR4 takes 3seconds for each slider movement.
