[News] NAB 2012 Update!

If you’ve missed the news, NAB 2012 is going on right now. NAB is the big video show that gives professional broadcasting companies something to look forward to. To that point, there are budget options and other video announcements that are sure to peak the interests of budget shooters as well. So far, Apple, Fujinon, and others have made some interesting announcements…

Apple FCP X Update 300x164 [News] NAB 2012 Update! Pros across the globe shunned Apple after a much-anticipated Final Cut Pro X release fell short of expectations. Apple is picking itself back up again, however, with announcements for upcoming features that should help it be a more effective editing tool for the pros:
– Multi-channel audio editing tools
– Dual Viewers
– MXF plug-in support
– RED camera support

Is this enough to keep Apple going with FCP X?

Additionally, Fujinon announced a handy little lens: the 19-90mm T2.9 Motorized Lens for Super35mm/APS-C cameras. This neat PL-mount gadget combines Fujinon’s excellent optics with a motorized focus, zoom, and iris control. For $38,000, I’m sure you could work a few other solutions to do a similar trick, though.

The Fujinon 19-90mm T2.9 motorized lens includes an ergonomic handle and well-placed controls for controlling the focus, zoom, and iris.

If you want another solution to the Fujinon mentioned above, the HandiZoom might fit the bill. We don’t have a price yet, but add this to your twist-focus Canon (sorry non-Canon shooters) SLR lens, and you’ll have a similar solution for what’s sure to be a fraction of the cost. Check out the ‘brilliant’ video below that’ll take you back a couple decades…

I think Apple tipped their hand and sunk their ship on their “Pro” market, with the FCP X faux pas, OS 10.7 transitioning to iOS, and their feet dragging on Mac Pro boxes.
Consumer market builds empires, not niche pro markets sadly.

Nah Mike, Lenses with T-stops or movie lenses in general are ridiculously expensive. See Canon’s new stuff or anything from Panavision et. al.

Adobe is just going to chomp through Apple’s FCP mess up. Been using Premier pro to edit projects now and is sooooo good. RED cam support on FCP X? On a (now) prosumer piece of software, lol that’s a good joke.

I use Production Premium CS5.5 everyday at the studio for editing (I used to use FCP 7) and it is a more developed package then FCP X, but FCP X is a MUCH faster and smarter system for editing and has many features not found in Premiere. When I have to edit using Premiere or FCP 7 now I feel like I’m walking with 50lb weights tied to my ankles compared to the running speed of FCP X. I can’t tell you how many times the other editors around me have said, “I wish Premiere did this or that and I said well FCP X does do that”. The draw back is it dosen’t have the same coverage in its product suite for the whole production like Production Premium CS5.5 or the Upcoming CS6 (This is something Apple needs to fix, and it looks like they’re trying). As a package FCP X is incomplete, as an NEL it is Awesome. If they can complete the package with improvements to X or via additional Apple Pro apps, they can reclaim the market. But really, the whole not a Pro app argument? Since it’s many significant updates anyone who’s really learned and used the software in a professional matter knows that’s not the case. It’s ignorance of the program and prejudice caused by Apples bad marketing strategy when they released X that spawn these kind of arguments anymore, not actual fact. The programs does/will preform at a Professional Level but Apples biggest hurdle will be winning back the poor, poor, editors who had their feelings hurt when they released X (sorry, don’t mean to single you out, but the ignorant not a pro App argument is really getting on my nerves).

I think a lot of people forget Fujinon’s quality, too. They know how to make lenses… And no lens is going to be ‘gimmicky’ for $38,000. Although it will be for specific uses — people with that budget usually have quite different set-ups (and focus-pullers!).

Always good to hear the other side of the story, and thanks for taking the time to explain. Admittedly I have not used FCP X a lot, and maybe I’m suffering from the “It’s not like the thing I am used to and liked” opinion. I do however hope that more FCP X updates bring back more of the previous FCP features / more versatility. V interested in seeing CS6 package. Looks uber!

Explain the tablet like interface, for both OSX and Windows? Not made with pros in mind.
Faster transfer speeds, with bungled interfaces, do not make a professional computer.
