[Gear] The 1st Affordable Digital Cinema Camera

The Digital Bolex is a cinema quality digital camera. Which is to say it shoots RAW images or digital negatives, instead of compressed video. And the kicker is, the Bolex is not just designed with pros in mind but consumers as well, by making it inexpensive (relatively speaking), compact, and easy to use. Like a lot of great ideas that come to market these days, this project is being launch via Kickstarter. The Digital Bolex shoots it’s footage at a native resolution of 2048 x 1152 in Super 16mm mode. If you don’t get why all of this is so cool, then be sure to watch the promo video.

In order to get our content on to limited storage we compress our images. This makes post-processing far more difficult as settings (white balance, color balance, contrast, etc.) are embedded into each frame. But the Digital Bolex separates the image data from the settings making adjustments in post, a hell of a lot easier. It’s not with out it’s drawbacks though as each frame will be 3MB to 4 MB and the camera will still carry a price tag around $3000.

Funny, the film starts with a little girl saying that movie cameras originally shot “high quality, uncompressed images called film” which is entirely inaccurate because different films were used for different situations and they all had their strengths and weaknesses. Some were more contrasty, some less, some had a built in tungsten filter, ISO/ASA was a factor, etc… Although this camera looks like a great step in the right direction, I just wanted to point out that film is in no way “uncompressed,” it’s just different.
