I would love a one-way mirror test in which a film crew (no need for a 12 stop range) captures the responses of viewers taking in the results of images from different formats. On the other hand, I'm truly open to convincing. Anyone have compelling examples of how the extra bit depth and latitude makes us want to invest in the costly system? 3. Or is it all just the law of diminishing returns?

1. Its in the malleable nature of the file. Even if you compare a leaf 22mp file against a 5dmkII file the difference is not raw detail its the exposure latitude, and the bit depth. You can just do more with a 16bit 12stop dynamic range file than you can with a 14bit 10stop file. You can push and pull those files past the breaking point of a 5d file and then some. Yes in the end most printers and displays can display a max of 8bits but that isn't the point. Its not like comparing apples to apples. its like comparing apples to the whole produce department. You just have more options, when you can afford it.

I have shot with digital medium format (p45+) and canon/nikon systems, (canon is my main system) and the difference is not necessarily in the print.
