NYC Blizzard? All You Need Is A Little Imagination

Are you located in the North East and getting hit hard by the snow storm? Are you just sitting inside? Brian Maffitt isn’t. He decided to grab a projector, throw on some cool visualizations and point it out into the snow and take pictures of it. A very cool and unique idea and way to spend the time sitting at home.

I asked Brian a little bit about what he used and how he did it, this is what he had to say:

“My name’s Brian Maffitt, and I’m a photographer and videographer. I also own an online training company at Totaltraining.com, where we teach people how to use creative software like Photoshop. The equipment I used was a Canon EOS 7D with a 50mm lens, along with an Optoma DLP projector, displaying a movie from an attached Apple TV. The process went like this: I shone the projector out the window into the snowstorm that blew through last night, “Winter Storm Nemo”. I then used the Canon to take photos (and shoot video) of the projector’s light interacting with the snowflakes. I used a somewhat slow shutter speed to capture a little relative motion, but seldom more than a second or so. When the snow was drifting slowly, the results were colorful and etherial. When the snow moved more rapidly however, the spinning color wheel of the projector produced a strobing effect that generated separate red, green, and blue dots where the snowflakes fell… the end results are a wonderful mix of analog photo techniques, augmented by digital projection.”

What are your thoughts on this? I personally love them!
