Fstoppers Is Coming To Europe For A Road Trip And Photokina

Fstoppers Is Coming To Europe For A Road Trip And Photokina

This Thursday September 4th Patrick and I are flying into Amsterdam for a 20 day tour of Europe. At this point we don't have anything set in stone but our basic goal is to go from Amsterdam to Berlin to Prague to Austria to northern Italy to Switzerland, and then to Cologne Germany for the end of Photokina. If you live in any of these countries/cities we would love to meet up.

At this point we have 2 nights reserved in a hotel in Amsterdam. After that, we are open to any ideas. If you have a suggestion of a place we should visit we are all ears. If you have a place for us to stay, we might even crash on your sofa. We would much rather hang out with the locals than aimlessly wonder around these cities. If you live in Europe and want to give us advice or meet up, please join THIS FACEBOOK GROUP

ahhh guys!! I so wanna meet up with you! Im in Germany now but unfortunately during the whole duration of photokina, im going to be in the UK as im shooting a wedding there. im back on the 24th of September (and leave on the 15th). Any chance you're still around???

we fly back home from Amsterdam on the 24th

sorry i had to vote down that comment because that sucks :( but nonetheless, im sure you guys are going to have a rocking cool time up this side! :)

it sucks for me..sorry! haha

Hey Lee, I'll be at Photokina the whole week if you fancy eine bier.

from Amsterdam to Berlin by Car as the map suggests, train or do you fly?

At first we had planned to drive but we have been warned that rental and gas prices could be extremely high so at the moment we are thinking about taking the train. Do you have a suggestion?

I live in the Netherlands and I must admit that gas prices here are rather steep: about $8.5 / gallon (€1,70 / liter). So yeah, I wouldn't really recommend a car either. There is a really good connection from Amsterdam to Berlin via rail. Highly recommended; used it a couple of times myself to get to Berlin (the train stops dead center in the city as well). More info can be found here: https://www.nsinternational.nl/en

thanks!

Have you looked into the EuRail passes? might be a pretty good thing to have, they're basically all you can ride passes for several railways throughout Europe.

That being said, if you want a ride to Photokina on the 16th, I can give you one from Karlsruhe, which is on the way from Switzerland to Cologne, but then again, the train will definitely be faster. 2 hours (from Karlsruhe) as opposed to 2 and a half with normal traffic...

Unless you plan to do many stops in between I would recommend the train as well. The train and bus system works very well here in Germany.

Yeah. Once in Germany, rent a fast car and travel that on most parts unlimited stretch of autobahn to Berlin. Its the experience of a livetime and well worth the gas prices :) Rent your car at www.sixt.de or similar, they offer pick up and returns at different locations (e.g. pick up in Cologne, return in Berlin). Route: https://goo.gl/maps/XNKHd Just beware of the parts that are in fact speed-limited, those holiday photos aint cheap ones should you get radared :) We can chug a beer or two in Berlin once your here! PM for that!

Shame you're not visiting the UK :(

We only have 20 days. We came to the UK a couple years ago

Jealous...can't wait to get back to Europe but with child in tow that's just not feasible at least for now.

Grrrrrr.... I'm grumpy enough already today without hearing about your awesome trip to a country I have yet to visit. Have fun, I guess. ;)

Lee! We'll be at Photokina between the DJI and GoPro booth. Please stop by, say hi, ask for Sinh. I'll gladly show you around our booth, gallery, and some new products.

will do!

And by we, I mean't f-stop. haha See you at the show! There will be coffee and Red Bull at our bar.

Austria :) great - where when ?

Probably around the 11th. Where should we go?

when you are ganna be in Berlin?

I would skip Milan and go to Venezia, it's beautifull

Venice is a dream. Look up Lake Como, north of Milan, but you'd need a car to get there.

Take me with you!!! Have a great trip.

You must, must, must spend at least 2 days in Budapest. My wife and I spent 3 nights there in June and loved it and it was really inexpensive compared to Vienna. Make sure you visit the New York Cafe if you go. Sunday Nights are the best for night photography due to the lack of people out after 10pm. I got great shots of Buda Palace this way. He is a link to my best of Budapest. http://goo.gl/uXhThx

I live in Vienna and rank Budapest best, Prague second and Vienna third as best places in Central Europe for photographers.

Try and keep this tread updated for those of us not on facebook.

Thanks and have a great visit.

Sean,

I did the Segway tour of Budapest. For about 50 Euro I had a 1:1 guide take me all over the Pest side of the city. The ride up the main street of Budapest on a Segway heading to Hero Square was something I will never forget!

Hey! I live in Switzerland, near Lausanne. What interests do you have? There are cities, towns and other historical sites but also lots of beautiful landscape, mountains and incredible hikes to do. I'd love to have meet you guys when you're around.

Fly back through Ireland. Stay here for a couple of days. Be totally worth it!

Florence is not on your map, but if you change your plans, let me know !!!

hey guys! when will you be in switzerland? i'm living in Zermatt at the famous Matterhorn! if you want to come by you're more than welcome!

Lee et al,

If you haven't already. Check out http://www.seat61.com/ for train travel tips and tricks for Europe (and the rest of the world for that matter)

I would rate Budapest (even though i got scammed 400 euro) over Prague and day. And its only 3 hours via Wien by train (a return ticket is only 30 euro). Well worth a side trip there

In Prague make sure you vist Kutna Hora (The Bone Church). You can easily do it as a 1/2 day side trip from Prague

Last thing. Do not, Do not change your money at the station or near Charles Bridge in Prague. They will rip you off faster than you can blink your eye.

Enjoy the Trip.

ps. Make a stop in Dresden too. It's 1/2 way b/w Berlin and Prague.

When are you guys going to come to Australia?! :)

Take me!!!! I'm small, I can fit in a suitcase :)

Looks like a blast. I can't wait to see your pictures.

Ok, hint hint: a road trip through Germany is not a road trip across Europe. You guys will love Prague. It's going to be the most memorable place you visit. I don't know about those other places you intend to drive through, but keep your foot on the gas, because Czech beer = best in the world.

any chance of coming to south east asia? particularly... malaysia?

Great to read that from you !! Is there any chance, even a very small one, that you make a stop in France ? It would be so good to see you there ;-)
Anyway, it's a good idea to spend some time in Europe and getting in touch with so many readers of your beautiful and helpful website.

He Guys, Im in almere right outside(20min) of Amsterdam. Dunno if you guys want me to setup a meetup? or something like that? I have Canadian Photographer Friend Renee Robyn over here. She just taught a few workshops here. And we are driving out to Photokina as well with Adrian Sommeling to meetup with the other cool crazy friends we havent seen in while like: Benjamin Von Wong and Udi from DIYPhoto, Mirko TrainToCreate UK etc etc :) lemme know if i can help with anything. Before that some urban exploring and usual running around through Europe.

It's seems that you are passing by Strasbourg, I will enjoy to make you a city sight there, it's a lovely historical city with the most unique cathedral in the world :) (http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cath%C3%A9drale_Notre-Dame_de_Strasbourg#me... )
