Once upon a time at brunch in Santa Monica, I created the biggest, most complex cheeseburger anyone had ever even attempted to ask a chef to make. I basically picked my top 10 things off the menu and asked the chef to put it between ciabatta bread. Then I ate the entire thing. It gave me severe meat sweats and rendered me unconscious afterwards, but it was the most delicious thing I had ever created. It’s my single greatest achievement in life. Django Greenblatt-Seay and JJ Dreier joined together to form Tree Speed, self proclaimed as “A of couple of Mid-Western guys who spend vacation time traveling the country shooting time lapse photography.”

Restaurant’s interiors can be just as beautiful and recognizable as the dishes that they create. When shooting a dish, you may want to include some of a restaurant’s interior elements in the shot. These can be chairs, walls, light fixtures, or anything else that shows off the restaurant’s character. To do this, you will need to be able to balance the light you are creating with a flash and the ambient light in the restaurant. So how do we go about working with these gatekeepers of the people photography industry?

When taking pictures of food in a kitchen you will almost always have to create your own lighting environment. Restaurant kitchens are usually lit by overhead fluorescent lighting that won’t help you make a beautiful picture of a dish. In these situations, you will have to make your own light. There is a problem, though. What happens when the shooting space is so small that you can’t fit a softbox or light stand into the kitchen? If you ever find yourself with only a counter top sized area to shoot on, this lighting set-up will create the shot you need!
Most of Vogue’s photo shoot behind-the-scenes videos aren’t full of a lot of meat, but they do give glimpses into the lighting and general demeanor of the actors and actresses on set. This video with Jennifer Lawrence is no different, but it’s hard not to love this girl. I think she might be near the top of everyone’s favorite actress lists right now. [more]
We can often get swept up in the world of digital video. Topics like ‘What it will mean for the future of photography when we can pull stills from video?’ occupy a lot of time and thinking.
Discussion like this is relevant but I sometimes think we miss the most important element of all. The single biggest contributor towards great video is actually making sure we understand what it is that makes a great still image in the first place. To go faster, we should actually slow down. Maybe even stop.
