Photographer, Chase Jarvis, Talks About New Models Of Creativity

The path to success changes based on who you ask. There is no one path that gets you where you want to be. As creatives, we keep defining that path daily. Chase Jarvis recently talked at the PSFK seminar and he spoke about the new models of creativity. He argues that the traditional system is broken and most people who have ‘made it’ have done so through a-typical methods.

He goes over a lot more, which makes this a really interesting presentation. Along the way, he goes over how he started and what he did to make it. It makes it quite relatable to our daily struggles in our careers.

Inspired by the video, I’d like to ask our readers:

What are some of the most interesting things you done to help your career that others would deem a-typical?

There are two secrets to success:

                1. Never tell everything you know

I’ve shot a lot of personal work for clients that represented a direction I wanted to take my work. They didn’t necessarily need photographic services at the time, but I would shoot things for them that I conceptualized on the trade-off that if they liked the shots they could use them for whatever. While working for free and “great exposure” is something I normally never do, at a time when I had no clientele at all, this helped establish a working portfolio which garnered more respect from potential clients.
