We’ve all seen breasts before, however in her series, French photographer Emmanuelle Brisson offers images that are an example of penultimate feminism. The titles are what bring De La Sensation together. As the startling photographs deliver a powerful message of women as “things.” No matter the guise of society or action, Brisson’s images argue that it is all driven by sexual objectification.

So many times have I heard the three words: “Women are objectified”, always with a negative connotation, and seldom never have I understood how this notion has come to be so much more about censorship and hateful discussions than about discussing the subject of objectification. Whether it necessarily is a bad thing as a general concept. We all objectify women and men continually during our lives out of convenience. “The bus driver” is seldom a subject to us, nor are the people around us that we do not know or relate to. The word “objectification” keeps being thrown around in a negative manner without really meeting any opposition. Are really women who are displayed naked or otherwise “objects” – if so, how are they objects? Is that not up to debate, is that not a subjective notion (that women are objectified)? How can someone claim to know, or claim to represent everyone viewing a photo, or someone taking a photo as “objectifying women”? Where do they become “objects”? In the eyes of the photographer, or in the eye of the beholder?
If they are viewed as objects in the eye of, for instance feminists. Isn’t it them who should stop objectifying women?
Too often self-proclaimed “feminists” claim to represent feminism in an attempt to spread their own personal norms and ethics. In a way like missionaries. They try and serve a kind of unproblematic “truth” to us, without really addressing the questions or the issue. They just say “this imagery is objectifying women” – without really saying how, why, or any such thing. And if they do, it is often under a guise of an arrogant, almost dogmatic “if you don’t agree, you are a chauvinist or misguided”.

I don’t get how it’s “penultimate” feminism. Since “penultimate” means “next to last,” is this just strange word choice, or is there some sort of second to last feminism? I’m confused. I’d be interested to see a female photographer’s take on the same subject.

i feel this is just an excuse for a horny boy with a camera to get some models naked, i mean i guess they are cool, but technically speaking they are not that great, creatively i guess they are nice but i would have much rather seen these with portraits and expressions. The only real selling point to these images is boobies, its the photographic equivalent of brittney spears or madonna. This set screams “art student who is mistaking fine art with nude girls and texture.

These photos aren’t “objectifying women”, as much as they are a commentary on how women are often objectified in other situations. I guess you could call this an “ironic” objectification, where the objectification is taken to an absolute extreme simply to make a point of the more subtle (but much more impactful) objectification in the real world. No faces are visible, only a naked chest and restricted poses, a metaphor for the social restrictive norms placed on women. So that’s the super simple analysis.
For the sake of clarity, let’s brush up on some definitions, using good ol’ wikipedia:
“This term [objectification] is also used to describe the treatment of a human being as a thing, disregarding his/her personality or sentience.”"
Feminism is a collection of movements and ideologies aimed at defining, establishing, and defending equal political, economic, and social rights for women.”So feminism is just “treating women as people”, and disregarding any question of gender. So I’d like to see what part of the “unproblematic truth” you disagree with. Probably none of it. (Also: what are the “questions or the issue” that you are referring to?)And yes; if you are unable to see the situations where women are objectified, or you think the humanist goal of treating women as intellectually and otherwise equal to men, you most certainly are part of the problem.

It might be a reference to the waves of feminism. I’m guessing it’s referring to the 2nd wave feminism, which focused more on sexual liberation, equal rights in the workplace, and equality within the family (as opposed to first wave, which focused on officially mandated inequalities such as rights to vote and rights to own property)

Expressions and faces are excluded intentionally; they’re supposed to emotionless and flat. It’s a commentary on how women are perceived by a large portion of the population.
If the only selling point is boobies, that’s your problem. It seems like the social commentary (directed at you) flew right over your head.

I don’t see where you read that she doesn’t like it in this article, you might want to read the article again.
Moreover, this is photography based, and maybe not your cup of tea, but please accept that in the name of art and photography, diversity is key to feeding the creativity.
I find it amazingly surprising how arrogant people are, totally disregarding the time and effort given by a whole team of editors for Fstoppers and many other websites not even to say for free.
