[Pics] Keep your Models Looking Fresh by Vacuum Sealing Them?

ja [Pics] Keep your Models Looking Fresh by Vacuum Sealing Them? If there is one thing I’ve learned while living in Japan it’s: when you are squatting over a Japanese toilet the business end points to the back. If there are two thing I’ve learned while living in Japan it’s: expect the Japanese to have a unique take on everything. Photographer Hal is no exception as he vacuum packs his models in his wacked out series called “Fresh Love”.

“I am currently seeking new dimensions in portrait photography by challenging the majestic theme of mankind, defined through love… In my early explorations I used to capture the models in a small room or enclosed space, these images can be seen in the photo books called Pinky & Killer, and Pinky & Killer DX. During the photo session I often prompt the couple to pose as if they’re in a sticker photo booth, an extension of the regular passport type which cause friends to pose in many alternative and fun ways. The focal point of the concept was then extended for the publication Couple Jam to include the use of the models bathtub, usually in their own home. I think of the bathroom as being one of the most private and intimate place in anyone’s home, this provoked a shyness in the models, and created a unique excitement and inspiration in the scene. In my most recent project I have applied the use of the vacuum sealed package, used to store futon covers in everyday life, I found that the couple can be sealed in, with the appearance of being freshly wrapped I have called this event Fresh Love.”

that’s what I was thinking.  unless it’s not really vacuum sealed.  more wet and heavy vinyl.  I don’t know?

                Scary and horrifying

definitely have to go into that racket with a safety word…. Artistic and sooo Japanese.

there’s no way that they’re legitimately vacuum sealed. the way those machines work is by removing the air almost entirely. they’re lungs would have collapsed – or so i would think. however, it certainly does appear as though they are. very well done and creative.

Can anyone say “wesson oil”…  the back has to be open. I would think it’s like a sheet tucked in on the bottom, very unique idea.

                Creative and creepy.

i think they just time themselves and hold their breath for the shot and someone cuts them out after. I mean, on average everyone can hold their breath for at least like 39 seconds? right?

They are totally vac-packed.  In japan, almost every house hold has these giant bags made to be used with a standard vacuum cleaner.  You put your winter blankets in them and suck the air out to save space  (which is a premium in Japan homes).  The bags have a plastic zipper on one side that can easily be opened.

I’ve got Hal’s previous books, and some friends in Japan are in this latest one of his. They said it was pretty scary, having all the air sucked out by a vaccum, but there were people near by with scissors etc to release it. They were inside with no air for a maximum of like 10 seconds or something…
