The Average Faces of Women Around the World

The Average Faces of Women Around the World

FaceResearch.org has published the results of a recent experiment where experimental psychologists at the University of Glasgow in Scotland have combined the faces of women around to world to approximate the "average face" of each country. Using a modern version of the technique that Sir Francis Galton pioneered in the 1800's, multiple images of faces are aligned and composited together to form the final result.

There is already controversy surrounding the results. Some people feel that the average is "too attractive." Part of this is explained by the process. Instead of having a lot of blurry images with undefined features, this method averages the shape of the features before blending the images together. Also when blending, remember that many singular issues are "averaged away." The study also does not reveal how the participants were selected or how large the sample size actually is.

No conclusive evidence, however, on Polish women's propensity for bangs.

because white 'south africans' are europeans

They should have combined all of them! Might be what the average woman would look like in the US in about 50-100 years.

it would be interesting to overlap all these results in a single image: the woman of Planet Earth.

and canada? - the one that combines them all?

I'll take one of each, please.

I thought this was done ages ago? I remember seeing something like this on Reddit last year or the year before.

Things like this have been done before. I've never seen it split up by region/ethnicity quite like this before.

I dont look like any of these people ,I guess thats good and bad viva la difference

very interesting - but , with the exceptions of israel and brazil, they generally focused on ethnically homogenous populations. would be even more interesting to see what the average woman in a much more ethnically diverse country (like the US or trinidad & tobago) would look like

yeah maybe in really hot people world.

These are mathematical averages, which makes them above average in attractiveness. Most people are not exactly or very close to the mathematical average.

Hey Preston. If she is a citizen she is Dutch. If her language is Dutch she is Dutch. If her skin color is dark she is dark skinned. And I don't really care about her chromosomes at this point.Or her religion.

All the average women are exquisite.

What do you mean by saying: "No conclusive evidence, however, on Polish women’s propensity for bangs."???

What about country Georgia? There are beautiful women and it's a completely different culture! :)

I don't know why anyone is debating with this raging racist Preston Wiginton.

The Brazilian represents women from the northeast of the country.

The first thing I thought is "There isn't a face here to represent the women of the United States of America." My second thought was "Oh, they are ALL representative of the United States!:

This "research" are bunch of BS photoshop jobs designed to create traffic so people will visit their website. For one, given the age of the population, the average women should be in her 40's, not 20. If there is any average here, its the average photoshop job. Things like this are dangerous. On the surface we might say, "See the average women is beautiful", but meanwhile, this makes the average women have a complex. Disturbing.

Is the average woman also in her 20's?

ha. good point mia

While the sample may be skewed, the averaging process creates an illusion of youth by smoothing out the faces.

nahh, they are too pretty to be average, plus I've been to many of those countries and this is not even close to represent what each country is.

They are "average" mathematically, which makes them *above* average in terms of attractiveness.

They're gorgeous! Women power!

There is SO much that I could say about this study.
The one and only thing that I will say is this: "West Africa" is NOT a country.
The saddest part is, I'm not even surprised to see it there. So typical.

Really? Just 4 faces to represent the 54 countries within Africa? *sigh*

All the rows have 4 faces, and that goes for south america, and asia... is Africa 'specialer' than them? This seems to have less to do with the meaningless boundaries political groups, and more to do with representing the populated regions of the world. Evolution didn't occur in the time of "countries" after all. It's also 4 more than Canada got.

I like how there is no United States one. Either they dont like us or the face would really be all jacked up because we vary so much as a country.

That or they knew it would cause controversy since if the person was one color or another there would be uproar.

here is not Georgian ...

@prestonwiginton:disqus What a disgusting troll you are. I'm so glad most people like you will be dead in a few years. Try using science and history to make your arguments instead of trolling like an angry old white man.

Preston is indeed a misguided, misinformed racist but I find your reaction lacks tact as well.

the sweden girl is my personal fave and england is second, maybe it's because I am blond too
anyway you're all talking about US being a country made up from immigrants but it's the same in most of the northern country now, when I take the subway in paris, I am always the lone blond and often the lone white person...

Are
these average faces of people weighted by age across the country? The
Japanese aggregate face should appear two or three times as old as any
African, if so, but these all look like people in their 20s

I wish Africa was more represented, esp. because it represents the most genetic diversity

Spanish women, why always angry?

16 White
12 Asian/Pacific Islander
4 Latin American
4 Middle Eastern
4 African

So by my prognosis, the person that compiled this "average" is someone that's White, has an Asian fetish, and doesn't take to kindly to the last three

Why interpret (negative) intentions like that? What if it was just the economic and practical aspect? What if it wasn't just one photographer? What if the researchers invited people to come in for a photo and only whites and asians came? What about all the other options?

Sorry Persian/Iranian average look is not this!! We are famous for our eyes and this is Azerbaijani eyes!!

You composite almost all of Europe and Asia, and give a mix of latin countries, but decide to combine Africa? Chad and Cameroon aren't even near each other and West Africa isn't a country.

I love how the average lebanese woman's eyebrows look like they have been plucked and groomed.

If England is there, why not Scotland? Both are regions of the United Kingdom. In fact, why is the United Kingdom not featured.

those Peruvian women got it goin ON

Porque las van oscureciendo hacia el final?

I run faceresearch.org. That is actually not our work. It was done using the face averaging tools on our website (http://faceresearch.org/demos/average - you can upload your own photos if you log in), but we were not involved in collecting the images at all.

In fact, the person who made them (http://pmsol3.wordpress.com/) simply searched google images for photos with names that he thought sounded like they were from these places, so we don't think the averages should be taken scientifically at all. The Face of Tomorrow project (http://faceoftomorrow.org/) is a much better example of this sort of thing, and the artist there took the photos in each city, so they are a more accurate representation of the average from that place.

We would love to be involved in a project like this someday in order to increase the diversity of faces used in scientific face research, but we currently don't have the funding for such a project.

No U.S.A.?

Its interesting how all the African/ black women are conveniently placed on the bottom of the list. How random is that?

Another of those baseless assumptions. Probably those were the pictures with less working materials and the sequence is based on how accurate (more data) the averages are.
