Masking Inhumanity: A Haunting View of Animal Slavery

Masking Inhumanity: A Haunting View of Animal Slavery

If you follow my posts then you know I love featuring artists who inspire, thrill, educate or straight up creep us out. So when I found Finnish photographer Perttu Saksa I couldn't wait to share his work. In his 2013 series, "A Kind of You", Perttu focuses on macaque monkeys that are shackled, trained and then rented out by "monkey masters" to beggars for the purpose of street performing.

I contact Perttu for permission to post his work and he informed me that he promised the post to Time Magazine first and politely asked me to hold off until then. Well "then" is finally now, so here it is. I hope you love these shots as much as I do.

A Kind of You (2013):
“A Kind of You" is a documentary work of an uncanny asian tradition, where monkeys are trained and dressed to act humanlike in order to ask money from the bypassers. Modern city culture has turned the old tradition in to eerie and haunting act of cruel street theatre where animals become something else, never able to reach our expectations. ”

Perttu began this series in response to his dismay and horror towards the use of these monkeys for panhandling. Since then Jakarta has made the ownership of monkeys a criminal code violation and announced a cash incentive for handlers who release their monkeys from captivity.

Von Wong's picture

wow thats insane

I am sure death can never come to soon...

Just miserably wrong. Not the photos, which of course are amazing. But the practice of abusing those animals like that. Just wrong. Horribly wrong.

I don't know why but these photographs are hauntingly beautiful.

Proof mankind is destroying this wonderful world.
