Rare Photographs of Lady Liberty
The New York Public Library’s Flickr photostream hosts some rare photographs that have been scanned in and displayed for the public. In celebration of Independence Day, a gallery of photographs from the building and assembling of the Statue of Liberty seemed fitting.
The Statue of Liberty was designed by Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi and dedicated on October 28, 1886 as a gift to the United States from France. The figure representing Libertas, the Roman goddess of freedom, who bears a torch and a tablet with the inscribed date of the American Declaration of Independence, July 4, 1776. The photographs were shot by Albert Fernique around 1883.
