The Quickdraw Makes Multiple Lenses Easy

If you shoot high paced events or like to get creative with your focal length, you’ve probably run into the dilemma of how best to carry and swap out multiple lenses on the go. Only a few effective  ways to deal with lens swapping exist. Riley Kimball has come up with a simple fix that allows for quick, safe, and simple lens changes.

Instead of slinging multiple bodies around or having to carry your gear back behind you, maybe you could try snapping different lenses onto your belt. With the Quickdraw’s intelligent design, it’s easy to slide your lens off, clip it onto your belt, and snap on a new one. You only need one body and you get to keep your gear in sight and accessible. Want one?

i think this is cool but pretty expensive.  $80 for each one?  so you have to spend at least $160.  i use a ThinkTank belt and have two lens pouches which seems to work just as well as this would but cost me around $80 for the whole system.

              • http://www.daneitz.com/ David Neitz

I shoot Primes and I’m a “Bagger”. I would be so paranoid having my glass hanging at my waist. Do those things even have a lock or do they simply depend on the “threads” of the lenses. No thanks!

              • Warne Riker

Im with David – Whats to stop the lens from just twisting back off… And the agree with Brian – way to $$$$$$

              • http://twitter.com/GAndinov Georgi Andinov

soooo if something happens… it happens to all of you lenses. No thanks

              • http://2dhouse.com/ David Dvir

Yeah I never like to say things that are too negative but this is a terrible idea.  First, lowepro has done a better job at 1/4 the price without any gimmicky video about what kind of lens swapper I am: http://amzn.to/lensexchange

Second, this thing does not keep your lenses safe or protected at all.  I wanna see how it acts when a fat guy wears it.  Or when you kneel or bend over.  So many situations left not mentioned and I think overall the price tag is way too high for a product that simply seems risky at best.

Third, I am sad that a selling feature is “showing off your lenses”.  That’s really the top priority of all professionals out there…

              • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1043414114 Vitaliy Sholokhov

So, anyone who passes by you can “quickdraw” your lens and walk away with it without you even noticing?

              • Jockemon

Seems like the perfect way to accidentially drop your glass.

              • http://twitter.com/spectaclephoto Rich Johnson, AD

Hum…First thought that came to my head was “How do I know it’s locked in?” I agree with Vitaliy, what is to stop someone from quick drawing it off your belt while you shoot?

              • http://twitter.com/charlesdlfd Charles de LA FOREST

If any of you guys had taken time to look at the page on kickstarter, you would know there is a locking system built in, and that the only way to engage or remove a lens is by having the plate in the upright position (and it will not go down unless it is fully engaged)… so no, it won’t fall off, and no, no one will steal your precious glass.

As for the price, way too high indeed… which is too bad!!

              • Ron van Middendorp

Here is an idea, buy two bodies…. dont swap lenses.

              • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1043414114 Vitaliy Sholokhov

I’m looking at the promo video and the guy doesn’t lock, just twists through the threads. And it doesn’t take much effort to lift it up just a bit to detach the lens.

Love seeing ideas like this but not really interesting.. seems very iffy. Even at 1.50ish on the video.. as the scene cuts it looks like shes about to slam that belt full of lenses into the stair rail post.. Id rather keep them in a heavily padded bag thanks.. doesnt take me much longer to do a switch.

              • photographyenthusiast

Looks like I’m the only one, but I love this idea!!!  I really could have used this while shooting my first wedding a couple of weeks ago.

              • http://twitter.com/bendeavin Ben Deavin

I can’t believe that noone has mentioned the biggest draw back … you look like a massive idiot!  On the plus side the class wouldn’t hang around long enough to be embarrassing in a crowded places as and two second lift and twist and your $1500 lens disappears off into the sunset.

              • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=615314143 Christopher Cooke

I cant imagine any working professional buying these! to much money & no protection. Less than 1/4 the price and you can get Think Tank Bags. Protection, easier to drop in, and no showing off whats in the bag.

              • leethecam

Whilst I get the security issues (knowledgeable thieves can lift and  make off with your lens quite easily…) there will be many events where it is a closed environment and quite safe to have a lens hanging.

I’d be more concerned about bumps and knocks (when that long lens hits the deck as I kneel down…) or about getting dust from my clothes on the back element when I lock the lens in place.  (Lens swapping is always a point of concern for me).

As for price…?  This is a low volume, highly engineered product.  $160 (which ends up translating to £160 usually for us in the UK) sounds about right for a dual system.

I could see myself using it in conference setups or parties.  Having the option to pop on my 35mm prime whilst mainly using my 24-70 and 70-200 could be useful.

UK dealers at all…?  (There’s nothing like actually trying the thing out before splashing the cash).

Thieves will admire the workmanship of the CNC-tooled lens mount and appreciate how easy it is to steal your expensive lenses conveniently labeled with a red or gold ring around the barrel. :)

              • http://www.facebook.com/people/Tyler-Quinn/692355283 Tyler Quinn

I could see this being useful for when precision timing is priority. Bumps and knocks could be an issue…

As for the security concerns; the lenses seem to be fastened well enough and in your sight, so whats the difference between someone walking up and grabbing your camera out of your hand or snatching something out of a bag when its open? I’m not sure how much that has to do with the design of the product…

              • http://www.facebook.com/people/Arsen-Stolyarov/100000500240111 Arsen Stolyarov

It’s a pity they are so many photographers lens damage and drop, clothing and fluff!
Maybe it mega comfortable, but not safe because of the possible inaccuracy owned users…

              • http://www.facebook.com/tijmen.dalhuijsen Tijmen Dalhuijsen

I think it’s a great idea too. Unless you want to walk around with 3 bodies around your neck, this is by far the easiest method to swap lenses. The lowepro sleeves are MUCH harder to operate.

Personally, I’m a bagger and it’s not always convenient: or far from that actually.

I don’t know why everybody is jumping on the hate train here.

                - No protection? What are you planning on doing with your lenses anyway. Besides, lenses are fucking STURDY.
                - It gets stolen? Because people know how this system works? Because walking around with 3 camera’s isn’t going to get you mugged?  Because you’re walking around an event you’re shooting where there’s thieves everywhere?
                - It’s expensive? Yes it is. But everything in our field is. Besides, this is a quality product.
                - It looks stupid? I agree… But most photography related stuff does.

Seriously. Quit hating. It’s an amazing system. I hope the guy reaches his required amount.

I took a look at some of the work by photographers with really negative comments and I gotta say maybe concentrate on your own work as having multiple lenses doesn’t seem to help how boring and awful you are. This is a prototype, and like all new products it will evolve, I suppose the americans here are having problems with that view point as they do not believe in evolution.
If you don’t like .. move on if you want to raise questions then do so but be respectful and helpful, not douchey and arrogant.

Okay, I’ve watched both videos, the one here and the one about how it locks ans secures your lenses, and I think it’s a great way to swap lenses quickly during a shoot or session. NOW, to all you shooters worried about being robbed, I don’t think this system is just so you can carry around your lenses ALL THE TIME! If you know ahead of time the job you have to do and the lenses you are going to need, this makes your lenses super accessible to you, not to robbers, which is when this system would really shine!

              • robsydor

I think this is a great invention, I shoot lots of concerts and I can see how this would be handy…I had concern about the lens getting bumped out of the locked position, but this video cleared that up… Fstoppers should post both videos to help others understand

Im a wedding photographer that shoots only with prime lenses so I swap alot. I use the the
shoot sac. you can hide your glass, they are easy to access and protected from the elements. Plus the stream lined design make it look like your not wearing a dorky bag or gadget.

              • Teresa Whyte

I think this is great and very innovative!  I use the ThinkTank belt/bag system which is OK but this quickdraw idea beats that hands down.  I would definitely buy.  $80 is about £50? which is comparible with the ThinkTank system.

              • Jernej Lasič

As far as thievery goes… if you take this belt on a crowded metro with a couple of lenses hanging from your waist, you deserve to get robbed. In other word, do you think this is aimed at travel photographers or event and wedding photographers? There’s a no-brainer for you…

I can’t imagine being robbed at a professional event, a wedding, etc.
Is the groom’s mother-in-law going to steal your 1.2 prime? Don’t think so. You need to relax a bit.

Sorry, but your arguments around security are invalid.

Bumping into things, on the other hand, is something to be concerned about.

              • http://twitter.com/ithackermike Mike Thacker

I see a blended solution working the best here. I would buy it if it comes with that girl in the shorts to follow me around with my lenses attached to her belt. That way she can keep an eye out for the thieves, I don’t look like a dork and she manages to look even cuter by sticking her hip out at me as I grab the right focal length.

Looks like it works awesome….. at keeping any hot bridesmades from accidentally thinking you’re not a complete dork.

If you shoot in manual, multiple bodies is nothing but a pain.  I would consider multiple bodies if there was a way to have the cameras sync so that as you change the settings on one body, it wirelessly syncs the settings on your other camera.  The camera manufacturers could easily integrate that setting but they the will only update and integrate features as little as they need to, to stay in competition with with each other.

              • Jose Anselmo

Great idea, the only draw back is the possibility of damage your lens when you walk and shot. When you are concentrated in taking photos you always forget your distant from objects around and you could accidentally pump in a furniture, a door, people, you name it. But for speed of changing the lens its unbeatable never the less.

              • http://www.facebook.com/martin.melnick Martin Melnick

I think it’s a great idea. I have a capture clip which hold my camera against my chest when I have my cam bag shouldered. This would be a perfect accompaniment to it. It isn’t that expensive in the world of photo/film gear. It’s worth it to me. I would walk around with one of these in a heart beat. AND IT DOES HAVE A SAFETY.

If you’re working at an wedding/event where you need to worry about theft, I think you have bigger problems than worrying about your lens being stolen from your hip :P

              • Dave Tameling

I have no doubt that it works as advertised but it’s missing some things I count on from my Thinktank Skin pouches. It can’t hold any bits and pieces like extra batteries, it can’t protect lenses from rain, and it hides nothing.
