Rumored Nikon D4s Details

Rumored Nikon D4s Details

The Nikon D4s seems to be all the buzz lately.  Nothing is official yet, but rumors are going around that match up across multiple sources. Nikon displayed the new D4s body at CES this year and since then we have been able to find some rumored information about the camera and what is to come.  Officially, we are told that the D4s will include a new image processor and “more advanced autofocusing performance”.  Which both, in themselves, are great announcements.  There have been quite a lot of details that Nikon Rumors has recently publicized that can get a lot of fans excited about this new body.

Again, none of this information is direct or official from Nikon.  Though, they have confirmed that the D4s is set to be a true release.  Let’s take a look at some of the features we found on Nikon Rumors about the body.

  • New focus mode: now can use 3D-Tracking in 9 or 21 points group
  • Native ISO: 100-25,600
  • Improved time-lapse movie recording: can change interval shutter in 1/6 stop (adjustable)
  • White balance can be fine tuned by 0.25-0.50 Kelvin
  • You can adjust the color tone of the camera LCD screen (which seems to address the color issue with the D800 and D4 LCD displays)
  • 16MP resolution (same as the D4)
  • HD movie at 60 fps/1080p
  • Slight body changes
  • Estimated to be the same price as the D4 ($5,996.95 in the US)
  • Better low light performance

When will Nikon be releasing this body? We don’t have a specific date but we can tell you not to expect it anytime before March 4th.  According to Nikons description on The Photography Show in Birmingham event that is scheduled to be happening March 1 – March 4, the Nikon D4s will be exhibited and that the show will be “ahead of its official release”.  If the price tag rumor is true, this will give everyone a bit of time to start saving up for this body.

The press release from Nikon on January 6th was enough to get anyone excited for this camera.  Declaring the D4s as “Nikon’s new flagship model” and noting that the new image processor will be more advanced than the current Nikon D4.  “The D4S represents a concentration of Nikon's advanced camera development technologies and legacy as a leader in imaging. The D4S will further expand the possibilities for professional photographers who demand the best possible performance and image quality in challenging environments. The Nikon D4S will build upon the success of the acclaimed Nikon D4, a camera highly regarded for its speed, unrivaled low-light ability and amazing image quality that made it the choice of professionals and advanced amateurs around the world.”

With all of this news, what do YOU want to see in the upcoming Nikon D4s?

about time 1080 60fps

Having 60fps is always great. You never know when you need to use it and it helps for when you are slowing down footage in post for certain scenes. Now we just need to start getting 120fps as a default (that'd be nice)

I'd like it to shoot 4k video

It'd be nice, but not sure where they would fit the technology to make that happen into the body.

the d4(s) is bigger than the gopro and it shoots 4k, granted not the best quality but does shoot it.

True. Another factor though would be write speed. Cards (sd or cf) would have to be pretty fast to handle all of that data getting sent to them. I know with my 60d, the recording will stop if I am not using a card that isn't fast.

The vast majority of people that WANT 4k don't NEED 4k. It's overhyped marketing bullshit just like the megapixel count. Unless you're printing large files, large MP is irrelevant. And no doubt they'd hike the price because of it.

Just saying.

I own a Red Scarlet and FS700, been shooting and finishing at a 4k DI for years now. I am also a Nikon shooter, if I was a Canon guy I'd be perfectly happy with a 1DC. Sure not every project doesn't have to be finished in 4k, however the extra resolution to downsample down to 1080p, and stabilize definitely makes any video look better.

I need it to be free of moire and aliasing

Great write up, John! Looking forward to being your biggest fan here on Fstoppers!

Thanks Thierry!

GPS, built in WiFi, remote RF capability. For this price, all should come standard.

Wifi? and please kill XQD :)

"You can adjust the color tone of the camera LCD screen (which seems to address the color issue with the D800 and D4 LCD displays)"

Can that be construed as a tacit admission that there was indeed an issue with the LCD ? Which Nikon so strenuously denied for so long. Just like the D610 is a tacit admission of the D600's apparently unsolvable oil issue.

Dear Nikon : No one will hold a grudge against you when one of your products has a glaring problem. But please acknowledge this issue in public and redeem buyers in some way.

If it had 24mp I would start saving for it immediately..

Live view bulb same is in Olympus OMD EM5

What I want in a d4: 20fps 36mp sensor native iso of 1 million. field view property so everything is always in focus. 12k raw video footage.

That's what she said.. lol (sorry.. just had to)

No need here for anything higher than 16mp. The increase comes with a price and this price cannot go higher and get my business. I'll buy Mr Nikon if (repeat IF) the price is the same as the D4.

Any idea if video capture has been updated besides the 60p? The D4 was super soft in FX and DX mode, only sharp in 2.7x crop. No good. I shoot weddings/events on two D800 bodies but could really use the super low light capability of the D4s... it just needs to shoot sharper.
