Snapseed Gets Updated, Folds into Google’s Family of Products

Snapseed saw an update in the past 24 hours that brings it into the fold of Google products, along with the newly refurbished (and dramatically improved) Gmail app. Snapseed’s logo has changed and loading screen now shows the Google+ name. The app also saw the addition of a new filter and new frames. Most importantly, Snapseed is now free.

Photo Dec 06 7 44 47 AM Snapseed Gets Updated, Folds into Googles Family of Products

              What’s New in Version 1.5:

              • Now free!
              • New icon!
              • Built-in Google+ sharing functionality!
              • New Retrolux filter! Use one of the newly created film styles, combined with a range of different scratches and textures as well as light leaks to create a truly retro look for your photos.
              • Updated Frames filter! Now includes a wide range of new, high quality photographic frames. Colorize the frame edges to match the look of your image or switch to square mode with a single tap.

I’m not a big fan of the new filter (kinda washes out images and makes them “meh” looking) but I’m planning to give it a little longer before I completely write it off. The new frames are ok, but nothing breathtaking. The real reason this is important is now the app is free, which will likely make it one of the most popular photo editing apps out there. It’s not like Instagram in terms of a wholly built in sharing system, but the full resolution edits and options you get in Snapseed are pretty great.

The app is also now available on Google Play, which is huge for the growing number of Android users worldwide.

If you don’t already own it, you can download the app (which is becoming one of the most used apps for photo editing on my phone) for the iPhone and iPad as well as the Google Play store now.

I had been waiting on the android version for quite some time, as it was “coming soon” back in July. If you are an android user, Photoshop Touch is worth a look too. Tho not a direct competitor, it’s a good option for web publishing. (it has a max 2048×2048 px output size)
