‘Specialicious’ Behind The Scenes Shoot With Jonathan Thorpe

Northern Virginia Magazine wanted a fun and different approach to an ad for their bargain locator website, Specialicious.com. Jonathan Thorpe, an amazing commercial photographer and a regular on our Fstoppers Facebook group, was assigned the task of shooting the project. The concept, a beauty queen who shopped on the website and is trying a paintball experience for the first time.

Jonathan used a combination of PCB White Lightning 1600 and Alienbee 1600 Lighting, a Calumet softbox and a Canon 5d MkII with a Tamron 24-70 2.8 lens.

Ha, that ad is great. The photoshopping is a little ghetto on her chest ribbon thing, though.

Great work! I was wondering about the music in the background. I always struggle finding music for our bts videos and I’d love to use a well known artist, do you just add it in and hope that youtube doesn’t take it down?

              • http://twitter.com/jthorpephoto jonathan thorpe

thanks! and yeah basically, i try to always credit the music at the end of the video, the only thing youtube has done, is disable mobile play back for me

If the magazine wanted the sash in there, they should have provided it as a real world prop for you. The lettering isn’t even consistent. -___- Good job on your part though Jonathan!

Yea, the sash thing really stands out as poorly done, too bad.

The cloud wisp off the end of the gun barrel is also a bit weird, looks awkward or if it’s supposed to be a shot just gone off… it really doesn’t work, either way.

                Otherwise, nicely done.

Awesome job! May I ask what triggers did you use for the lights, it seems like you were able to overpower the sun there. It’s been one of those things i’ve always wanted to try but never could do right.

              • http://twitter.com/jthorpephoto jonathan thorpe

in the full version thats not cropped, thats actually a sun beam flaring into the camera. when they cropped it to add the copy, the sun got taken out. i was kind of shocked about the sash too, but what can you do ya know?

im a paintballer and i saw this ad i got pissed. the modle is holding the triggers down. and that gun can shoot fully auto when that trigger is held down like she has it. along with no mask? bad for paintball.
