The 2011 Subaru WRX STI Commercial

It’s to easy to do things in post these days. If you can think it, someone can do it on a computer. To stand out, we are beginning to see a trend in TV commercials where directors do it “the old fashion way”. So far on Fstoppers we have posted BTSVs for Old Spice, Lexus, Nissan, and Levi’s commercials. Subaru didn’t want to be left out so they decided to film an animation in a single take using a perfectly timed car. Keep’em coming!

              • Marko

the moment camera zooms out to show the driver and you see the frames in the background…it’s surreal

The BEST commercials always test to be the simplest in concept. That was AMAZING! And okay, not the most simple to put together but the flip-book idea inspiring it all. LOVED it! THANKS FOR SHARING!!

Okay where is this commercial ? Can we have some link ?
                Thanks

              • Greg

What a cool way to create animation, live action mix. The BTSV was great I really appreciate the mechanics involved in this kind of creativity. Way cool!

              • Simon

Lee, your video is actuallu way better than Patrick’s one. You weren’t joking. lol That’s insane ! How can you do that without going nuts with the maths and the precision and the work it demands ?

              • http://www.rlmorrisweddings.com Lee

@Simon, Ya if you notice as the animation is playing it starts to slide left out of frame and then the car barely slows down. I wonder how many takes it took to get that right.

              • Eric

This video looks awesome. I love it, and it reminds me a bit of the video of the car playing drums by driving past and triggering all the drums pieces.
The only thing that bothers me about the video is the whole idea behind it. By that I mean, that the car is supposedly powering the whole commercial. My issue is that, technically, any car going the same speed, with a rig mounted to it, could do this commercial. You know? So it’s not really a good ad for the car, just a cool looking video.

              • http://jonchiang.com Jon

That’s brilliant. I love it when the camera zooms out of the animation and onto the driver

              • Dan vander

In the end the spot is boring. It looks like a ton of time and effort was put into it, but you watch the commercial and it doesn’t come across at all.

I’ve been on these shoots where so much sweat goes into the execution of a weak theory- then you see it and can’t believe it was all for that…
