Lighting, from the eyes of a Photo Assistant
Assistants, aka “voice activated light stands”, can be a wealth of knowledge and experience if you are fortunate enough to have access to one that’s been around. It’s not entirely unheard of, to meet an assistant that knows their lighting better than the photographer they are working for. If only one of them would create a blog about their behind the scenes exploits… wait a minute. What do we have here?

              A Website that Outs “Photographers
You may find You may find YouAreNotAPhotographer.com (a site dedicated to outing supposed professional photography businesses) entertaining, educational and yes even offensive. But one thing is for sure, if you don’t get why these pics should be making you shake your head with the occasional chuckle, then you need to be looking at these photos as examples of things NOT to do or consider a new line of work.

Every now and then a cool photo series makes the rounds on the internet and it’s hard to miss. But because I like to play it safe and Stephen Wilkes‘s “Day and Night” exhibit is too awesome to miss I had to post it.

Splicing Family Genetics with a Camera
Once again I find myself impressed and vexed all at the same time. When am I going to produce a creative body of work like Croix Gagnon and Frank Schott’s “12:31” or something as intriguing as Ulric Collette’s “Genetic Portraits” where he virtually, splices family members together?

The genetic similarities between two family members results in a portrait that almost looks like a normal person, especially where ages are similar.

Stop Motion Video Created With 2335 Prints
Stop motion videos are becoming increasingly more popular as digital cameras and software make them easier to create. Dave Wallace decided to make things quite a bit harder when he shot 2335 images, had them printed out, and then shot them a second time in picture frames on the wall. It took hours of work but the finished product is well worth the time.

Stellar Animated Photos: Inspired by Dead Stars & Cosmic Matter
Ignacio Torres puts together a series of animated photos that are nothing short of cool. You maybe put off by the motion at first, thinking: “Just another set of animated gifs.” but the more I look at these shots the more I like them, especially once you understand the concept behind them. The technique Inacio used to create galaxies, though simple, was surprisingly effective.

Extreme Shooting Not For The Faint Of Heart
In this behind the scenes video, Jimmy Chin talks about the changing culture taking place within the sport of extreme rock climbing. He and his fellow climbers explore Yosemite National Park as he captures images for National Geographic. I dabble in climbing and think base jumping would be a huge thrill but I’m not sure I would ever have the guts to even hang with Jimmy for one day if this is his typical photo shoot.

Proof Viral Hurricane Shark Photo Is Fake!
Hurricane Irene is battering the East Coast of the US right now which has left many stuck in their homes browsing the internet for storm updates. One particular story that has filled my facebook news feed and was tweeted by CNN involves a shark swimming in the streets of Puerto Rico. Apparently the shark was swept up by Hurricane Irene and trapped inland on flooded streets of the Caribbean island. But something about the photo seems very suspicious.

“To me, photography is an art of observation. It’s about finding something interesting in an ordinary place… I’ve found it has little to do with the things you see and everything to do with the way you see them.” -Elliot Erwitt-
