The First Review Of Canon 24-70mm F/2.8L II

The new Canon 24-70mm f/2.8L II is supposed to be in stock on September 13th, but YouTube user ThatNikonGuy (kind of ironic) already got his hands on one and did a comparison review between the new 24-70 and the old 24-70.

              Some interesting notes:

              • A difference in focal length at 70mm between the first and second generations
              • 82mm filter thread on the front vs the 77mm on the first generation
              • The new lens is slightly shorter and lighter than the original

You can pre order it now at B&H.

Well, that made me feel better about buying an “old” 24-70 not too long ago. Looks like it’ll still hold its value fairly well.

Despite these two incredible lenses, are there still Canon and Nikon users who are happy with the Tamron 24-70 Image Stabilized lens to vouch for it’s quality? I’ve seen the review here on stoppers; I was referring to those who’ve purchased it and used it on actual weddings and portrait shoots.

I have the Tamron 24-70 and have used it alongside the Nikon equivalent, and I do have to say the two lenses are almost identical.  I opted for the Tamron because of the VC for video but was pleasantly surprised as to how well it did.  Have used it in real world situations and LOVE IT!  the contrast and clarity are magnificent, the color saturation is in my own opinion better than the nikon version (just more pop).  The only thing that I have qualms about with this lens is the zoom ring, nothing bad at all it just is about 1/4 of an inch too long.  As in when I turn the Nikon from 24-70 it takes one twist of the wrist, the Tamron takes a whole twist and then a little extra to go to either extreme.  Nothing bad, just took me a few uses to get used to it.  Any other questions let me know!

Many thanks for your response, Rhett! I’ll definitely check the Tamron zoom out.

The field of view of the old one is little tight than the new one, because of the length of the lenses. The old one little taller than the new one.

                I’d rather save a bit more and get the 50&24 L primes..Just keep my 85 1.8
