It’s kind of extreme as the subject is moving very fast and the speed difference is great. But you can get an idea of the choppiness for more regular speed stuff by looking at the hand.

By: F8 Photographyhttp://fstoppers.com/using-variable-neutral-density-filters-in-bright-sunlight/comment-page-1#comment-21544 F8 Photography Tue, 31 May 2011 12:56:00 +0000 http://fstoppers.com/?p=8346#comment-21544 Its a screw on filter…I use a 77mm filter and use step-down/rings for smaller thread lenses (such as the one in the video used was a 50mm 1.2 (72mm thread).  The blue thing you can see is a part of a follow focus rig for video useage as I was switching between stills and video throughout the day.  That just helps the follow focus teeth grip the lens for manual focus.

Often these radio systems such as the Pocket Wizard Plus II is limited to a sync speed of 1/250th of a second. This makes it impossible to shoot with a wide open aperture in bright scenes while keeping your shutter speed low enough to trigger the flashes. Hence, a ND filter is necessary to pull down the amount of light allowed into the lens by several full stops of light.
