White Girl Poses for African Queen Shoot

In a recent editorial for Numero magazine white model Ondria Hardin poses as an “African Queen.” With a ton of deep bronzer the white model fit the part, but why not choose an African American model? The modeling agency that represents Ondria also had several black women to choose from, however the magazine chose to paint Ondria instead.

I personally think the magazine and agency could have found a better model to fit the part. Should the magazine have hired a black woman instead of painting Ondria black to fit the African Queen editorial?

I think this will offend many people, especially Africans, considering painting a white woman black does not give her any African features, such as on the face.

I do understand it from a photography perspective also though. For example, you could dress up a white woman into many different ethnicities, in the same way you could say… paint a black woman white. I can see the experiment and creativity there.

It’s funny how people think that “it’s 2013″ it’s an argument.

It’s 2013 and Africa is still poor, it’s 2013 and it’s world crisis.

Please don’t be as stupid as they want you to be.

              • http://twitter.com/duskrider Andre Goulet

It’s funny, because when I first saw the photos, I saw “just a person” in them, not a white or dark skinned person, just a person. That’s why what they did doesn’t matter. How YOU see people is what matters, not how these shots were done.

              • Domagoj Kunic

                this is borderline ‘racialist’ :-)

              • http://twitter.com/THEGREATZEEE THE GREAT ZEEE

my friend. i agree with you, but lets not forget there was once a time not to long ago where a group of people who wanted to consider them selves “just a person” had to look for a sign above a water fountain that “just a person” couldn’t drink from for what ever valid reason another group of people put it there for. they hung these people and put them in jail and deprived them on simple necessities of life. not fast forward to 2013 and we have just a person in “black face” maybe this group of people should start putting sign over the water fountain again and everything will be back to normal.

Jason says …”Who gives a flying f***. I mean seriously they made her look darker with make up… lah di dah big f***ing whoop, it’s a creative decision, heck it’s their decision and if you read into it and say it’s offensive this way or offensive that way, your really just trying to find controversy where there isn’t any. It’s like you being offended by someone who decided to dress a certain way, which is utterly stupendous. Grow the f*** up. The s*** I’m beginning to read on this site…

It’s okay to have differing opinions on subjects.  Opinions with insight (and sometimes humour) will always get more mileage if they can be expressed in an intelligent manor.  Clearly you lack both.

              • DeathNTexas

Agreed. That imbalance of racial power is still very prevalent in many parts of Africa. There is also the issue of European colonization policies. These are not really issues from history for some people.

                Sorry!!!

              • http://www.colorspace.am Alex Masters

You *DO* realize that ‘black’ and African’ are not synonymous with one another ..right? They could have used Candice Swanepoel or Yolandi Visser – so people need to figure out why it is they’re irritated. Because the girl isn’t African? Because she’s not black? Because ‘African’ was used in the title? Because of some skin bronzer? Because they just.. feel they should be irritated?

Do we need to start having affirmative action within the Fashion industry, now? And why did no one get up in arms when Rankin produced photos of Rosie HW black from head to toe?

              • Rachel Evans

Are you serious??? The photoshoot was about african queens and instead of using an actual african queen they use a white girl….it’d be just as bad if they used any other person who wasn’t African or of African descent. That’s like doing a photo spread on a particular high school’s dress/looks and you don’t even use actual students from that school. Instead, you hire 19 and 20 year olds bc you think they’ll make the spread look better. It’s insulting.

              • Rachel Evans

well then they shouldn’t call it African Queens. Call it white girl from North Carolina.

              • Mbutu Namubu

                Yep, that’s exactly right.

              • Mbutu Namubu

There were no black people in my film school in the 90s. One day, I was hanging out with the director of the department in his office and asked him why there were no black people. He pointed to a stack of papers on a bookshelf and said, “that stack of papers are full ride scholarships for any black people that walk through the door and ask for it.”

At the time, I was a dirt poor college student going deep into debt to pay for my tuition. I had straight As in school and always tested at the top 99% in placement tests, yet there were no scholarships for me.

So I don’t want to hear any more Bullshit about colored water fountains! Today, it’s the white people that are the ones discriminated against. That’s a fact and anybody that says differently can GO TO HELL.

              • Kyle Pero

Its not offensive that they painted her black. Its offensive how ridiculous she looks! She looks like ove of those tanning bed addicts. Her bone structure is completely caucsasian. Bad creative decision.

I never understand why people buy People magazine. There are so many more interesting things to read than artificially created controversy…
I guess that is how Fstoppers is getting more hits now…
                More controversy to talk about…
Few days ago was some ad rejected problem, before some photog with iPhone speed shooting weddings and now painted model…
                It became so cheap here…
                I am out of here!!!

              • http://twitter.com/duskrider Andre Goulet

You bring up good points, but maybe, just maybe (although probably not), the point to these photos was to show that white/black/brown… whatever skin, we are all the same inside. If we change our skin colour, we are still the same person, with the same wants, needs, pleasures, pains…

              • http://www.facebook.com/ziazon Jason Lei

Clearly, you have missed the entire point of my post. Even though I used a plentiful of “foul” words throughout my post, I never stated it wasn’t okay to have a different opinion. The message if it wasn’t clear enough was, stop trying to find controversy where there isn’t any. Now go f*** yourself.

I understand what you mean. But what do you want, its administred by “wedding photographers”? Oops, am I getting racist now?

                Bye

              • jpfranco

To answer your question regarding how is this offensive, it is offensive because the representation marginalizes black women. Marginalize is to relegate to an unimportant or powerless position within a society or group. The creative team’s decision to put a white women in black face conveys the message (whether intentional or not) that a/ any black woman cannot/does not represent or portray the image of an African queen. “People” with a dissenting opinion of this creative work aren’t being so sensitive they’re just tired of seeing blatant truths circumvented and dealing with the “peoples” superiority complexes.  Btw…when was the last time you saw a black model painted white???

P.S Any magazine that decides to create a fake black person to portray “the African Queen” is not very creative because they’re trying to damn hard. #limitedvision #epicfail

                Response from the photographer.

                http://blog.jedroot.com/jri/2013/02/sebastian-kim-responds-to-the-controversy-surrounding-his-recent-story-for-numero-france.html

              • DeathNTexas

I buy that the photographer dd not intend to offend. However, I don’t buy that he was just going for a tanned look (as he said in his response). None of the women he listed as an inspiration looked anything like this model in her makeup. I don’t think anyone here is racist or a jerk. I do believe they were insensitive to valid racial issues. Either that, or the retoucher had a breakdown and went rogue.

              • Chezlie Alexander

Hmmm.  As much as black’ and African’ are not synonymous, it’s fairly obvious to me, based on the fact that that the model’s skin was significantly darkened, that the photographer wanted to portray a dark skinned African.  Which begs the question, “why not just use a dark skinned African?”

Yes there are white Africans, and if she was not darkened then I would have been fine with the photo. But that’s not what happened here

              • DeathNTexas

It’s called social empathy. Because you don’t find it offensive, doesn’t mean that it isn’t to someone. One person does not get the right to say what is offensive to others, only to argue whether that offense is reasonable.

This is not *created* controversy. They didn’t just paint her a different color or give her a different look, they painted her as a different race. One race *pretending* to be another is always controversial. Look at Mickey Rooney in Breakfast at Tiffany’s, the history of minstrelsy, etc. It deals with self identity. Does another race have the right to define your race, your sense of beauty, and ultimately your identity.

              • http://www.bostonperspective.com/ Derek Boston

I think it will be quite comical for the model to show up to an agency with these african-american shots in it.

              • http://www.facebook.com/AngelaDaltonModel Angela Dalton

I don’t see a problem with it, alright it would of been better to use a black girl but unfortunately they didn’t and they chose to use a white girl instead. Maybe there is a reason for the choice, maybe there is a hidden agenda. All I know is I kind of like the images and as a model I would agree to create some images like this myself.
Its all about art and creative ability. Always ask the question why, but don’t judge the persons mind, you did not know what they where thinking.

                From a black girl..

I think it is a beautiful shot. Fro  a fashion and creative perspective the photography is lovely. People should just get over the obvious. Black people are so quick to use the ‘racist’ card to everything. STOP PLAYING THE VICTIM then you will stop being the victim. Stand proud in your race.. I AM. We all envy and try to emulate each other.. you moan about this shit yet you wear fake hair aka wigs, fake lashes, want a tan, braid your hair etc. They have used a white girl to portray an African Queen.. AT LEAST THEY DID US JUSTICE :)  think about it if they had used a black girl and painted her white that would have been obviously way more offensive so get over it. Its a lovely image. the girl is gorgeous..  get over it and stop being so predictable!

You are being ignorant right now. and of course you are white. hah funny.

              • Gif

omg people are so ignorant, I cant live in this planet anymore.

The practice of painting white people dark/black has been there since long time ago, this is deeper than just painting your skin black. It has social and racial issues buried underneath. Okay, you dont understand, but at least try to.
