The practice of painting white people dark/black has been there since long time ago, this is deeper than just painting your skin black. It has social and racial issues buried underneath. Okay, you dont understand, but at least try to.

From a black girl..

I think it is a beautiful shot. Fro a fashion and creative perspective the photography is lovely. People should just get over the obvious. Black people are so quick to use the ‘racist’ card to everything. STOP PLAYING THE VICTIM then you will stop being the victim. Stand proud in your race.. I AM. We all envy and try to emulate each other.. you moan about this shit yet you wear fake hair aka wigs, fake lashes, want a tan, braid your hair etc. They have used a white girl to portray an African Queen.. AT LEAST THEY DID US JUSTICE :) think about it if they had used a black girl and painted her white that would have been obviously way more offensive so get over it. Its a lovely image. the girl is gorgeous.. get over it and stop being so predictable!

I don’t see a problem with it, alright it would of been better to use a black girl but unfortunately they didn’t and they chose to use a white girl instead. Maybe there is a reason for the choice, maybe there is a hidden agenda. All I know is I kind of like the images and as a model I would agree to create some images like this myself.
Its all about art and creative ability. Always ask the question why, but don’t judge the persons mind, you did not know what they where thinking.

It’s called social empathy. Because you don’t find it offensive, doesn’t mean that it isn’t to someone. One person does not get the right to say what is offensive to others, only to argue whether that offense is reasonable.

This is not *created* controversy. They didn’t just paint her a different color or give her a different look, they painted her as a different race.One race *pretending* to be another is always controversial. Look at Mickey Rooney in Breakfast at Tiffany’s, the history of minstrelsy, etc. It deals with self identity. Does another race have the right to define your race, your sense of beauty, and ultimately your identity.

Hmmm. As much as black’ and African’ are not synonymous, it’s fairly obvious to me, based on the fact that that the model’s skin was significantly darkened, that the photographer wanted to portray a dark skinned African. Which begs the question, “why not just use a dark skinned African?”

Yes there are white Africans, and if she was not darkened then I would have been fine with the photo. But that’s not what happened here

I buy that the photographer dd not intend to offend. However, I don’t buy that he was just going for a tanned look (as he said in his response). None of the women he listed as an inspiration looked anything like this model in her makeup. I don’t think anyone here is racist or a jerk. I do believe they were insensitive to valid racial issues. Either that, or the retoucher had a breakdown and went rogue.
