Cape Times Photoshops Famous Moments In Time Into Self Portraits

Self portraits are everywhere! Facebook, Instagram, you name it. The Cape Times newspaper in South Africa took important moments in time and turned them into self portraits. Modified through the power of Photoshop, they were able to make them quite realistic. The entire purpose was to tell readers “how they get their stories straight from the horse’s mouth via a first-hand accounts.”

Street Photography From A New Perspective

Shooting street photography is always a great way to find some interesting subjects. Not only do you usually achieve a compelling image but you tend to hear some enthralling stories as well. Jesse Rogers went out and shot these in such a way that gives you a sense of optimism for these characters. I know we've all seen B&W's of homeless people and yes they are engaging and frequently depressing, but Jesse series seem to tell the whole story and not just the somber side.

John Keatley Shoots For Wexley School For Girls

John Keatley's portraits always have a great sense of fun about them that I've always appreciated and this series isn't any different. This series is for the Wexley School for Girls Advertising Agency and John Keatley's sense of humor is in full swing. These simply lit photographs are a lot of fun and it's great to have a look at how they were made.

Could High Resolution Video End The Future Of Photography?

For years, videographers have been saying video will replace photography altogether. Last year we tested this controversial statement in our own Red Epic Video vs Hasselblad Photo Shootout. In this latest video, Abraham Joffe along with Philip Bloom and Sue Bryce test the idea of simply pulling out still shots from video and printing them at reasonable sizes. Just as we found with our own video, capturing the definitive "micro expression" with a video camera like the new Canon EOS-1DC can be both precise and incredibly clunky.

Terminator 2 T-1000 Special Effects BTS

When I was a kid (and still now) I loved Terminator 2. The special effects at the time were the best we had seen yet. The way the T-1000 morphed in and out of liquid metal blew my mind. Now days it would probably be done 100% with CGI, but when this movie was made CGI was still in it's infancy and they had to use a lot of puppetry. T2 had a lot of CGI firsts though, including being the first movie to have realistic human movements on a CGI character, the first use of a PC to create major movie 3D effects, and many other firsts. Check out this BTS video on how they made some of the molds...

Taylor Tupy's Sand Studio Set Is Pretty Awesome

One thing I love about the Fstoppers Facebook Group is seeing all the amazing work our readers publish. Taylor Tupy is a pretty awesome fashion and editorial photographer based out of Minneapolis. In this video he shared on Facebook, Taylor brought in gulf coast white sand into the studio to produce an awesome effect. Taking your production value to the next level is probably the most important thing a photographer

Minimalism, Because Sometimes Less Is More

As photographers, we sometimes tend to make tight compositions and make the main subject in the photo take over a large area of the frame. We feel that if its important, we need to focus on it, make it apparent and zoom on it. Sometimes, zooming out or stepping back and making your main subject take only a tiny area of the frame, can do magic to your images. Check out these great images of minimalism found on Flickr.

Photo of Baby Grabbing Doctor's Finger During C-Section Goes Viral

An Arizona doctor was surprised while performing a routine C-section when the baby reached up and grabbed his finger. The moment was captured by the baby's father Randy and the couple originally kept the photo secret thinking it would not be received well by others. The mom, Alicia who happens to be a photographer in Glendale, Arizona decided to release the photo on December 26th on her Facebook page. Since then the image has received 9,000 likes, over 5,000 shares and her number of fans on her page has grown tremendously.

Everyone who has ever taken any interest in photography has thought about attempting to take one picture a year in order to fuel creative growth or to create an interesting and varied body of work in a relatively short time span. Jonathon Britnell put his own spin on the 365 project (technically a 366) by shooting one second of video every day for a year and compiling into a very cool documentary look at his life over the last year.

Photojournalist Launches iPhone Watermarking App

Photojournalist John D McHugh was so fed up with copyright infringement on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram that he has taken drastic measures and built an iPhone app called Marksta specifically to add watermarks to images uploaded to social networks. Apparently he was really tired of people stealing his images without credit, and came up with a solution that helps him and other photogs who feel the same.

BTS Video of Gwen Stefani Shoot for Vogue

At 43 years old, No Doubt frontwoman Gwen Stefani poses for Annie Leibovitz for the January cover of Vogue magazine looking spectacular. A short behind the scenes video of the shoot was shared. While there is no instructional content in the 3 minute video it is interesting to get a behind the scenes peek into the shoot and see how the different sets are put together. While most of the shoot was of Gwen wearing some amazing threads, her band did make a cameo appearance in some of the shots.

Be sure to click through to his full selection of favorites at the end of the post, he has around 60 that are absolutely worth checking out.

This Camera Will Make You See With Your Ears

Dr. Amir Amedi, brain researcher and Neurobiology professor from the Hebrew University in Jerusalem, developed a technology that lets blind people 'see' with their ears. In this TEDx talk (TEDxJerusalem) he shows how he managed to use a simple camera, and transform the video captured into sound waves that quickly become visual images in the brain. It's amazing to see how they can 'see' when someone smiles at them, just by listening to the video they capture with that small camera.

2013 is shaping up to be a pretty interesting year with regards to Canon bodies, even after 2012 brought us some pretty great ones.
