The Mavic 2 Pro can record video in 10-bit, but this mode suffers from significant barrel distortion on the edge of the frame. DJI acknowledged the issue and created presets and values to correct this problem in Premiere Pro, Final Cu, and DaVinci Resolve.
What Is the Problem?
An automatic correction of the barrel distortion is applied natively when recording video in 8-bit, but the distortion is not corrected when filming in 10-bit (DLog-M and Hybrid Log Gamma or HLG). The Mavic 2 Zoom is not affected by the distortion because it cannot film in 10-bit.
How To Fix It?
The video above shows a custom fix for the Mavic 2 Pro, but DJI just released its official correction in the latest user manual (version 1.2). DaVinci Resolve and Final Cut Pro X users must input these values manually, while Adobe Premiere Pro will implement the correction automatically in its presets.
Is the Video Quality Affected?
By definition, a post-production correction generates a little bit of crop or stretching, so the image quality is affected. That being said, the barrel distortion on the Mavic 2 Pro is relatively modest, and the footage is very sharp. The quality loss shouldn't be dramatic. In any case, I prefer to lose a bit of sharpness instead of experiencing an ugly optical distortion.
What About LUTs?
DJI also created a dedicated LUT for the Mavic 2 Pro. The free .cube file must be applied on DLog-M footage to obtain a Rec709 look. Another LUT can be found here.
I do not a Mavic Pro 2 yet, but I do have a Sony FS5ii with the kit lens and there is distortion when it is wide. Thanks for the article since I was unaware that you can correct lens distortion in FCP/AP/DR and I will use the same technique for it.
Great! You may want to research if some people released presets for the FS5 and your kit lens. Sometime the community already has what you need.
FS7 also remove all inbody lens correction when outputting raw.
Not big news, just few correction to add in post.
Only the paid version of Resolve can use these values (which are not presets, by the way). Those of us who are using the free version will need to visit Fusion tab, and make use of the Warp/Lens Distortion effect, as described in a good video by Waa Productions on YouTube.
