Meet the DJI Ronin SC: Lighter and More Intelligent

Meet the DJI Ronin SC: Lighter and More Intelligent

For those of us who use gimbals, we know how heavy our setups can get over time. Having a lighter setup can make things easier when on the go, and DJI is here with yet another solution.

DJI has released the Ronin SC, a newer, lighter, and slightly more advanced version of the Ronin S.  Weighing in at only 2.4 lbs (41% lighter than the Ronin S), this new gimbal was designed specifically for mirrorless cameras and portability. The motors support around 4.5 lbs of weight from the payload with a battery lasting around 11 hours. Some of the most useful features are the three-axis lock for travel and ability to use Intelligent Modes.

Coolest Features

  1. Three-axis lock: This acts as a safety feature when transporting the gimbal. There were times with the Ronin S that I always felt like I was beating the thing up when packing it into a bag. This build feels slightly more like the Ronin 2, where everything was made a certain way intentionally.
  2. Active Track 3.0: This has been a feature on DJI's drones for years and has proved to work pretty well for people. I was shocked to see that DJI is now using this with their gimbals by integrating the technology through their app. You now have an option to mount your phone to the hotshoe of your camera to use as a screen and access additional features.
  3. Force Mobile: This is another amazing feature for this gimbal to offer. Just like the Ronin 2 and the DJI Force, you have the ability to control the camera using the accelerometer on your mobile device. I think for me, this is the coolest update, and I am really excited to put this mode to the test.

Overall Thoughts

I do not see this gimbal being a replacement for the Ronin S, because it does not hold as much of a payload. However, I do see it having a different purpose for people that are looking for something a little bit less than Ronin S. Starting at a price point of $439, the Ronin SC is a great value for the quality and features it offers.

I am a huge nerd when it comes to drones and have been flying for over 4 years. I enjoy doing aerial photography as my personal work but shoot tons of video for work as well. I am a part of Simply Visual Productions and Simply Sounds, working my way into an industry I couldn't be happier to be a part of.

What camera/lens combos work with it?

I wish I was lighter and more intelligent.

Hahaha don't we all ;)

Mine just arrived this morning. My first Gimbal. Now to get it working? Yikes. I am pumped to add transition to my photo work. Gonna do a lot of freebies to learn, etc. This gimbal is just right for my mirrorless Fujifilm XH-1

You should have some fun with this one :) very easy to use and you can check out my YouTube if you need any help setting it up

I could not get mine to work the cable for the fujifilm gear is not compatible as they stated and no button to turn on video, has to done manually. Huge disappointment, Shipping back tomorrow. Not sure what avenue to go now. I have the fujifilm X-H1. DJI messed up with my brand. I assume sony, Nikon will do ok, but not for me

At a weight capacity of 4.5 lbs. this would barely hold an A7R IV + 24-70 2.8 GM combo ... thinking the S still makes more sense

I agree with you Chip! I think this was intended for smaller setups than that. The Sony lenses can get quite heavy and Ronin - S typically holds up well with weoght
