Why do we keep seeing photographers make the same photography marketing mistakes? In this video, I take a look at the mistakes I see photographers making time and time again and look at how to avoid such pitfalls.
For some unknown reason, we seem to fall into the trap of thinking that photography as a business is something special, something different from all other businesses out there. We end up fighting among ourselves in a race to the bottom with prices. There is also a lot of very bad information out there. The internet is great and horrific in equal proportions. We have all of the information and people's thoughts in the world at a click of the button, which is great but is also the downfall of many photography businesses who are unable to sift through what is gold and what is an uneducated opinion.
A key part of our photography business is our marketing. And although our business is the same as any other, our marketing does differ somewhat over more generic businesses such as supermarkets, as we are mostly highly skilled individuals with artistic merit for selling, which means simply adding a % to our overheads doesn't apply.
Having worked as a professional photographer for over 15 years, I have made most of these mistakes, especially in regards to pricing, as I too followed the wrong advice and ended up with a product no one was willing to pay for. Thankfully, I managed to eventually work things out for myself or find the right people to guide me, and hopefully, this video will help you move in the right direction with your business.
What is the biggest mistake you have made to date with your marketing?
