You can have all the talent and creative vision in the world, but if you don't have good business skills, you won't make it as a photographer or videographer. This excellent video details three common business mistakes photographers and videographers make.
Coming to you from YC Imaging, this excellent video details three business mistakes commonly made by photographers and videographers (though it's oriented toward video work, it's just as applicable to the stills side of things). Of the three, the most salient for me was definitely not getting everything in writing. When I first started professional work, I was very reluctant to get things in writing because I felt like it made me seem pedantic and distrustful of my clients and generally put an artificial barrier in our working relationship. This backfired on me several times, and I quickly discovered that clients actually appreciated the professionalism and security of having our goals and working agreement set out clearly in writing, and I haven't had any issues since. It's definitely worth the extra time and effort to draw up contracts and confirm things in writing, as it can save you a lot of headaches down the road. Check out the video above for more.
