Three Common Photography and Videography Business Mistakes

You can have all the talent and creative vision in the world, but if you don't have good business skills, you won't make it as a photographer or videographer. This excellent video details three common business mistakes photographers and videographers make.

Coming to you from YC Imaging, this excellent video details three business mistakes commonly made by photographers and videographers (though it's oriented toward video work, it's just as applicable to the stills side of things). Of the three, the most salient for me was definitely not getting everything in writing. When I first started professional work, I was very reluctant to get things in writing because I felt like it made me seem pedantic and distrustful of my clients and generally put an artificial barrier in our working relationship. This backfired on me several times, and I quickly discovered that clients actually appreciated the professionalism and security of having our goals and working agreement set out clearly in writing, and I haven't had any issues since. It's definitely worth the extra time and effort to draw up contracts and confirm things in writing, as it can save you a lot of headaches down the road. Check out the video above for more.

So this is where it becomes embarrassing Robert Baggs and Alex Cooke have posted links to the same article at the same time...

ITS TIME TO STOP THIS CLICKBAIT RUBBISH..

Isn’t it about time that so called ‘contributors’ to this excellent site stop just searching through YouTube for photo related vids and posting them on here..?
When you constantly do this it’s not a proper article, it’s not proper journalism and now two of these so called photographers have posted the same link to the same video that someone else has made...

It really lowers the bar and to be honest, both of you have been found out with this amateur style article writing in the vain hope of what.. boosting your social media profiles..?

Not journalists..? Then spend less time surfing the net and go and improve your photography... both of you have a portfolio that’s 2nd year college standard at best...

Fstoppers offers a wide variety of interesting original articles and videos that appeal to lots of people from seasoned pro’s to part time hobbyists...

Both of you have weakened the brand.

We have 70ish writers at any one time, this is the first time this has happened in 2019 and was fixed within an hour. We have four or five original articles every day and then news and the sharing of other photographers' content; this hasn't changed, and nothing has got worse

If you'd like to write for us, please send us your portfolio and a written article example and we can consider you, as we're always on the lookout for people who can delivery quality content. If Alex and I have a standard of writing you consider amateur, then come put us to shame; we welcome more talented writers than ourselves, and I have no doubt there are numerous.

That said, you're insulting people's portfolios and standard of writing behind a pseudonym, with no information on your profile, and no images uploaded, so you either shy away from accountability, or are not as confident as you might make out. If you do want to step out the shadows and create content, please do drop us a line.

Wow you sure got your panties in a bunch.

I've written 15 original articles this month alone. Robert once wrote 30 originals in one month. Aren't you the guy who tried to tell me to get a girlfriend and a dog? I think you have a personal vendetta.

Quality over quantity please guys.
2 x the same article? Not good, is it.

A little communication in the contributor forum/message board would have avoided this I think.

Can we steer FS back on track please, it's getting very PetaPixel with mistakes like this.

Cheers.

Crossed wires; my fault. All rectified now. My apologies!

It happens. Enjoy the rest of your Sunday 😁

Yes, It's time to put a stop to this!!
I'm referring to all the negativity from many of the posters on FS. I very, very, rarely click on a FS post any more due to all the negative comments from people; many of whom want the world handed to them for free! I have decades of full time, commercial photography and concluded long ago that many, not all, amateur photographers are some of the most immature, negative, jealous creatures roaming the planet. If you don't have anything nice (read "constructive") to say, go click somewhere else! A few (or many) bad apples spoil it for the whole bunch.
And to FStoppers - the more pleasurable experience it is coming here, the more money you make - which is your right! If they spent that time practicing, instead of worrying about cutting other people down, their work would be better : )

I’d like to bake you cookies.
