For the first time in 15 years, it recently snowed where I live. I desperately wanted to take my drone out but was petrified it might get swept away in a blustery blizzard or die of hypothermia. I wish I'd known these five tips for flying drones in wintry weather beforehand.
In October of 2022, I bit the economic bullet, spat out the shrapnel, and bought a DJI Mini 3 Pro. Honestly, it's one of the best purchases I've made in years and has really rejuvenated my love for photography. Don't let the naysayers put you off. The perspectives you can get from a drone are thrilling and can add a whole new level of complexity and marketability to your photography. It's incredibly easy to fly as well, which is really the one thing that had been putting me off for so long. However, I've only ever flown the Mini 3 Pro in gorgeous weather, so when it snowed recently, I wanted to take the drone out, but my doubts won the battle and I stayed inside.
If only I'd had these five tips for flying drones in nasty winter weather brought to you in this great video by Jake Sloan. Straight off the bat, his first tip is essential viewing: acclimation. If you get too excited and pull out your drone from its warm bag in your warm car, the snow and the cold will not be your drone's friends. However, if you take your drone out and just let the body sit outside for 10 minutes or so, it will get acclimated to the temperature and be far less affected by falling snow or the bitter cold.
